Margarita BergenDarlings,

You could smell the sweet scent of victory and pride all over Louisiana and New Orleans as our beloved teams, LSU and the Saints, claimed victory this past weekend. Congratulations to both teams!!

Last week, was a social marathon for me as always...I started my week with the celebration of Dia de los Muertos hosted by the Mexican Consulate on November 1. It was held at my darling friend Stella Jones’ Gallery. The beautiful altar honoring Mahalia Jackson was artistically prepared by Cynthia Ramirez. That night was also the opening of the electrifying Broadway Across America musical Rock of Ages at the Mahalia Jackson Theater.

On Wednesday, I briefly attended the 75th Anniversary of the Vieux Carre' Commission Gala at Antoine's Restaurant. It was a pleasure to see old friends and musicians Pete Fountain, Dr. John, Tim Laughlin and Jeremy Davenport . Fortunately for me, the other party that I attended was just around the corner at the Rib Room of the Royal Orleans Hotel. The delicious reception honored Rene Bajeau, the new Master Chef of the Rib Room at the Omni Royal Orleans.

On Thursday, I attended the 16th Annual Pasta and Puccini's Patrons Party honoring "Prince Calaf," Sammy L Steele III, at the lovely Ludwigs’ residence in Old Metairie. Entertainment was provided by my darling friend opera singer Uruguay-born Juan Carlos Valls. He will also be entertaining, along with Brad Little of the Phantom of the Opera and others at the JPAS' “A Night of Broadway and Opera” at Tulane on Wednesday and at Pasta and Puccini on Friday. These talented opera singers will also be performing at my upcoming Round Table Luncheon on Wednesday, November 9, noon at the Royal Sonesta Hotel. Not to be missed!

My busiest day was Friday. I started it by attending the annual Krewe of Cork Luncheon at Galatoire's Restaurant. My darling friend Alyson B. Cabes, Director of Corporation Travel and Travel Industry Sales for the Royal Sonesta was crowned as the 2012 Queen of Krewe of Cork. Congratulations Alyson!

Going to Galatoire's is always a delicious, social experience. I felt like a social butterfly going from table to table saying hello to old friends and meeting new ones. One of the highlights was meeting the new Recovery School District Head, John White who was in the company of Orleans Parish School Board representative for District 5, lawyer Seth Bloom, and lawyer Thomas Robichaux. Among others, I saw my Cuban friends, powerful lawyers George Fowler, Raul Bencomo and Raul Fontes. That evening, after a nap, it was time to attend the delicious “Signature Chefs Gala” to Benefit the March of Dimes followed by the Preservation Hall at Fifty: Celebrating Jazz and Old U.S. Mint Jazz Venue Debut Gala benefiting the Louisiana Museum Foundation and briefly the French Quarter Citizens Progressive Dinner.

On Saturday I regret missing violinist Vadim Gluzman and the LPO but after a day of working at Casell Gallery, I only had enough energy to attend the SPCA's Howling Success at the newly renovated Hyatt Regency. The food, entertainment and libations were "over the top" wonderful. Last night, I ended my week by attending at The Museum of the American Cocktail, a very informative lecture with historian mixologist Phil Greene and Chris McMilliam.

This week is not going to be much different:

Today, I am looking forward to hosting "Toasting with Margarita at Le Booze of the Royal Sonesta on from 5:30 to 7 p.m. My monthly Round Table Luncheon this Wednesday is going to be very special since it will feature an Afternoon with Writers, Opera and Broadway performers along with Hot, Hot Firemen. Not to be missed - see the calendar below.

That day is also the opening of the 2011 Words and Music. A Literary Feast NO. 9-11, staring Latino Literary Heroes. That evening is JPAS' “A Night of Opera and Broadway.” OnThursday, I am looking forward to attending “Uncork the Cure”- Cystic Fibrosis Foundation's annual fundraiser will feature champagne and sparkling wines for sipping while chefs from some of New Orleans’ best restaurants sample signature dishes at testing stations at Republic New Orleans in the Warehouse District.

On Friday, I have invited to the installment of my darling friend Gerard P.M. McGovern as the Honorary Consul of Estonia in the State of Louisiana. Congratulations!

On Friday night, it is the sold-out for months JPAS Pasta and Puccini and on Saturday it's the anxiously awaited NOMA Odyssey Ball.

Well darlings enjoy what our lovely city has to offer!

Kicks off Graffiti Awareness Week

The French Quarter Business Association (FQBA), along with other prominent French Quarter groups, implemented an effort in 2010 dubbed Vieux Carre Graffiti Abatement Program or VC-GAP . Our effort is solely a community action plan to eradicate graffiti from the Vieux Carre. This is a multifaceted program hoping to help property owners that have been wrongfully "tagged" as well as punish those defacing the property.

VC-GAP will host a press event in Jackson Square at 10:00 AM. We are asking the city administration, the police department, and the district attorney to "crack down" on the crime of graffiti in the French Quarter with the aid of the recent state law authored by Juan LaFonta which makes defacing a historic district building a felony offense punishable by up to 2 years at hard labor and up to $1,000.00 fine. (La. R.S. 14.56.5) Among those expected to speak are State Representative Juan LaFonta, Superintendent Ronal Serpas, and Councilmember Kristin Gisleson Palmer. Each will speak to how their office is playing an active role in this community movement to rid the Quarter of illegal graffiti.
