New Orleans Saints closer to hooking the Tuna, Parcells to replace Payton
Written by

With every comment he makes, Bill Parcells sounbill-parcells-saintsre likely to coach the Saints this season.

Parcells said if he is asked by Payton to coach the Saints he'll do it.

That takes us a step closer to Parcells, 70, coming out of retirement, something that could happen in the next few weeks.

"If Sean says to me, 'Bill I need you to do this for me,'" Parcells told Bob Glauber of Newsday.  "That's what friends are far."

Parcells has turned down two head-coaching opportunities since retiring from the Cowboys after the 2006 season. He calls this "personal because Payton is one of his guys."

Parcells and Payton played golf on Tuesday and GM Mickey Loomis was there to get to know Parcells better.

"We literally did not talk about that job at all," Parcells told Glauber. "The only thing we talked about is 'You're going to like this situation. I know a few of those players, just a couple. I think Sean wanted me to meet with Loomis. I didn't know him very well.

"I feel an obligation, a responsibility to help Sean. There are a lot of things going on that are unanswered, and a lot of ancillary things that need to be addressed.. That's down the road."

Parcells told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen by phone on Wednesday. “Sean’s become a dear, dear friend. I’m trying to be a friend.

“You know, when I was a young coach, there were people like Chuck Noll, Chuck Knox and Tom Landry who were there for me. I think to honor those guys who helped me, you turn around and pass that legacy on to somebody else and Sean’s an example of that. If he needs me and the owner and GM feel the same way, then I’d be a hypocrite if I didn’t consider it.”

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell might allow Sean Payton to coach the Saints while he appeals his season-long suspension.

"I said in a letter they have to appeal by April 2, I believe," Goodell told the Associated Press. "If he decides to appeal, I probably will allow him to continue as coach and I would expedite the hearing and expedite my decision."

Payton is undecided if he will appeal his suspension. His suspension begins on Monday.

Saints fans are trying to figure out how a commissioner fine or suspend a coach or player for something the league can't prove? And, two years ago, the Saints denied having a bounty program and back then the league couldn't prove that system existed...

SOME hither, others yon: Saints DT Aubrayo Franklin, one of the top 10 unrestricted  free agents without a new team, was the 49ers' franchise player in 2010. His 2011 market was surprisingly slow and he signed a one-year contract with the Saints. Now, he's going on 32 and coming off a disappointing season with the Saints where he struggled for playing time. The tape of his 2011 season may be turning off teams...Saints will have five picks in the April 26-28 NFL draft: 89th pick (third round), 122nd (4th), 162nd (6th) and 234th (7th)...

SOME hither, others yon:  The most worthy trading card, the 1909 Honus Wagner, will be placed for sale on an online auction. The card's owner expects to get at least $1 million for it and he said he could get $1.5 million...New Saints linebacker Curtis Lofton said he's staying at home to avoid Falcons fans. "The Falcons fans are "giving it to me pretty bad for going to the Saints," said Lofton. "It was an easy decision to come to New Orleans and we're going to win with or without Bill Parcells."...
