Tuesday Is Payton’s NFL appeals date, Hartley back for New Orleans Saints
  // Sunday, 01 April 2012 12:58 //

saints-aintsAccording to ESPN, New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton and its general manager Mickey Loomis are expected to be in New York at NFL headquarters to exercise their appeals of their respective suspensions levied early in March.  The suspensions arose out of the bountygate scandal.

The appeal will proceed in front of the NFL commissioner Roger Goodell who some say is acting as the prosecutor and Judge and now appellate court judge in the Saints punishment process.

Reports claim that Payton is not questioning the term of the suspensions but wants clarification as to what are his limitations during this period.

Payton has taken full blame for bountygate although some experts believe his action was to help obtain a softer punishment during the appeal.

Currently, the Saints front office is in substantial uncertainty. With draft season about to get underway, it is not certain who might fill in for coach Payton.  Also, it has been alleged that 22 to 27 Saints players were involved (possibly some current and others perhaps who have moved on to other teams).

The Saints have discussed the possibility of hiring retired coach, Bill Parcells, to fill in for Payton as interim coach.   So far, Parcells has said that the Saints have not made him an offer although he has acknowledged talking with Payton.

Also, it is being reported by the Times Picayune that Saints K Garrett Hartley is expected to be back with the team and that his hip has fully healed.   Hartley was replaced after the injury by retired kicker John Kasay who had a strong year for the Saints.

Hartley gained recognition kicking the winning field goal in sudden death against the Minnesota Vikings during the NFC Championship game.  The Saints went on to defeat the Indianapolis Colts in the Super Bowl.
