New Orleans Saints: Brees, Benson, NFL Draft--Crazy To Chaos
Written by

colstonThe New Orleans Saints have had a crazy spring and it now gets even more chaotic.

With the Draft approaching, vacancy in top coach spots, Brees virtually on his knees begging for a fair contractual shake, and now owner Tom Benson and top management engaged in split loyalties and duties with the newly purchased New Orleans Hornets, the New Orleans Saints might not be a big audience town, but it is indeed a town commanding a big audience.

So, here’s the news for today:

NFL Draft

The NFL draft is less than two weeks away and counting towards April 27th.  The team has no 1st or second round pick so unless something occurs prior to its picks, will have to do with the also rans.

Will that make a difference?

Mickey Loomis talked about this with the Times Picayune earlier this week and felt the future draft will be like the prior ones, Saints coming out well in the mid-rounders:

"We've traded picks away before," he said. "I don't recall off the top of my head a year where we didn't have a first- or second-round pick, but look, that has happened before to teams. And we still have five picks -- third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh. So that's five players we can bring in here to help contribute to our team. So we've got to do a great job with those five picks and sign some college free agents after the draft that can help us. And look, I think we get more focused, not less, when you're short at the top of the draft. Because we have to do a good job, and we will do a good job with those mid-round and late-round picks because we have done that in the past."

From Will Brinson, "Tom Benson's purchase of the Hornets should do wonders for his image in the city, after he and the Saints took a pretty big hit because if the bounty scandal. For the past two years, the Hornets have been the laughing stock of the league, thanks to the NBA front office controlling, hiring, firing and player personnel power. David Stern's laughable work during the Chris Paul fiasco stands out as the low point of the franchise. New Orleans sports fans have become disenfranchised with the Hornets because of Stern's meddling, and the fact that the team is dead last in the Southwest Division."''

Drew Brees believes the Saints made the right choice in naming Joe Vitt interim coach. "I believe I speak for the entire team when I say we believe him as much as he believes in us."...Lance Moore said the team is prepared for the six games Vitt will miss because of his suspension. "The assistant coaches have a great grasp of what we need to do," said Moore. "Steve Spagunolo is not a rookie in this league. He knows what he's doing. He's been around the league for a long time. If he has to step in and coach a game or he has to step in and delegate to someone else, the linebackers will be fine. As far as not having a head coach, we've got so many guys that have played so much ball."...

SOME hither, others yon: The Saints replaced coach Sean Payton, suspended for the season, with Joe Vitter, who is suspended for six games. It's a sports first: A team's interim coach needs an interim coach,,,Drew Brees will make the headlines by missing Monday's voluntary OTA in a contract dispute. At first, I thought that was a big deal, but I looked up the definition of the word :voluntary."...Eli Manning will host Saturday Night Live on May 5. He'll be the third active NFL quarterback to host, joining Tom Brady and brother Peyton...

Here are my early suggestions for a new Hornets nickname: Buccaneers, Rockers, Grit and Horns...The nickname Hornets fits this team as much as tacos go with gumbo. At this point, Jazz is not going to happen, even though that name fits Utah as well as a crawfish boil... Lakers fits a whole lot better in Minnesota, where the team, was before moving to LA. That black and gold color scheme of the Saints would look how in an NBA uniform?  We'd like to see your suggestions...

While Bubba Watson was winning the Masters, Tiger Woods threw and kicked a club during his worst ever finish at Augusta. Tiger, forget the new swing coach and go back to your parade of bimbos...The Chiefs, in recognition of their 50th year in Kansas City, will give every season-ticket holder a personalized Chiefs jersey.. New Nike NFL jerseys are $115 and T-s are $37 and up. The prices went up because the league and the NFLPA hiked their licensing fees....

catRarely, have I seen few issues that have generated as much raw heat, tension, and passion than the confederate monuments controversy.

Just as existed during the real civil war, where brothers battled brothers, social media is the battleground, particularly Facebook, pitting friend against friend.

On one side of the tense divide, there are those who are protecting the New Orleans civil war era monuments.  Burnt in effigy, forever, is the symbol of Mayor Mitch Landrieu for up-ending what the monument protectors consider to be the loving civil society of New Orleans.

Lately, events have turned somewhat militaristic.

Some protectors of the confederate monuments have been staying vigilant, in person and online, even surveilling during the wee hours of the morning, waiting for the next Mayor Landrieu attack. On Sunday morning, with protections of snipers, masked workers and a dumbstruck audience, the worst of all of the monuments was cut and carried., the Liberty Monument.
