New Orleans wins big WrestleMania XXX in Mercedes Superdome, 2014

wweIf you see some big, muscular manchos walking around the Mercedes Benz Superdome next year, it might not be the New Orleans Saints or an opponent.

Instead, it just might be competitors and their fans of WrestleMania XXX which will be held at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome on Sunday, April 6, 2014.

In an All-Star press conference today, WWE announced the really big one for the city, its 30th anniversary birthday party in New Orleans.

“We are happy to announce that New Orleans will host WWE’s premiere event, WrestleMania XXX, right here in the dome on April 6, 2014,” said New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu at the conference, which took place at the Superdome itself. “This is just an unbelievable experience for us. WWE and New Orleans are going to be a perfect match. We are a perfect city for sports-entertainment; I don’t think anybody does it better than us.”

“WrestleMania is a celebration; it’s what we do,” said Mr. McMahon. “People from all over the world come to New Orleans and they’re going to celebrate the grandeur, the spectacular nature of WrestleMania.  That’s what WrestleMania is, and there’s no town in the world that personifies celebration more than New Orleans.”

Included in the celebration were members of the New Orleans tourism and sports industry including Rita Benson Leblanc, New Orleans Saints owner and vice chairman; Stephen Perry, President of New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau; Jay Cicero, CEO of the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation; and Alan Freeman, general manager of the Mercedes-Benz Superdome and New Orleans Arena.

As a special treat, Rock led the media to a couple of swings of  “When the Saints Go Marching In.”

Along with WrestleMania XXX itself, the New Orleans will host WrestleMania Axxess, the annual, four-day fan festival, and other major WWE events.

catRarely, have I seen few issues that have generated as much raw heat, tension, and passion than the Confederate monuments controversy.

Just as existed during the real civil war, where brothers battled brothers, social media is the battleground, particularly Facebook, pitting friend against friend.

On one side of the tense divide, there are those who are protecting the New Orleans civil war era monuments.  Burnt in effigy, forever, is the symbol of Mayor Mitch Landrieu for up-ending what the monument protectors consider to be the loving civil society of New Orleans.

Lately, events have turned somewhat militaristic.

Some protectors of the Confederate monuments have been staying vigilant, in person and online, even surveilling during the wee hours of the morning, waiting for the next Mayor Landrieu attack. On Sunday morning, with protections of snipers, masked workers and a dumbstruck audience, the worst of all of the monuments was cut and carried., the Liberty Monument.
