New Orleans Events: Musically speaking, WWE, Go Red for Women

Written by

margaritafrDarlings:

After resting for a few days from all the activities and celebrations associated with the Super Bowl and Mardi Gras, I was ready to resume my cultural life. And what a better way than to attend the annual Pan-American Life Fiesta Sinfonia at the Mahalia Jackson Theater.

Beloved, energetic Maestro Carlos Miguel Prieto and the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra shined brighly in a spectacular concerto that included living composer Stephen Dankner who was in audience as the LPO played his Symphony No.10 in memory of his dear friend Maestro Klauspeter Seibel. Venezuelan-born, pianist Gabriela Montero mesmerized the audience with her interpretation of Franz Liszt's Concerto No.2 in A major, and her improvisation of “Happy Birthday” for her boyfriend who was celebrating his birthday. The concerto concluded with the powerful and lovely Sergio Rachmaninov's Symphony No. 2 in E Minor. Following the concert, there was a reception in honor of the invited artists.

Yesterday, I was invited to attend the press announcement at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome by Mayor Mitch Landrieu and New Orleans Saints Owner and Vice Chairman Rita Benson that WrestleMania 30 is coming to New Orleans in 2014. Wrestling fans can be expected to pour in New Orleans beginning April 6, 2014, when WrestleMania XXX comes to the Dome.

The four-day event ends with a pay-per-view event at the Superdome. The official announcement included civic, sports and tourism leaders and executives from the media company, World Wrestling Entertainment, which organizes WrestleMania. In a news release, the WWE says the event will be televised to more than 100 countries. Darlings, this upcoming week is going to be a very exciting one. I am looking forward to the monthly Royal Sonesta Hotel's Round Table Luncheon on Wednesday, February 20 at noon at the Fleur de Lis Suite of the Royal Sonesta Hotel. It will be a literary event, featuring Rene Brunet and Jack Stewart authors of "There’s One in Your Neighborhood: The Lost Movie Theaters Of New Orleans," and authors Ed and Susan Poole who be talking about their book, “Louisiana Film History." Live entertainment by talented, vocalist Robin Barnes accompanied on the piano by Jim Walpole. The three-course gourmet luncheon is only $45 and includes complimentary parking and wines to complement the food. For reservations call Noel Scallan at 504-553-2220.

On Thursday, February 21 is Beethoven's 'Eroica' Symphony. Maestro Carlos Miguel Prieto leads the 70-member of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra in performances of Michael Torke’s “Ash,” Aaron Copland’s “Clarinet Concerto” and Ludwig Van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 "Eroica." Show time is 7:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church.

The annual Go Red for Women Luncheon that benefits the American Heart Association is taking place on Friday, February 22 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. Guests can participate in free health screenings, free educational seminars and a silent auction from 10-11:30 a.m. At 11:30 a.m., the ticketed, heart-healthy luncheon program begins with the stories of local women affected personally by heart disease.

That evening, Alliance Francaise de la Nouvelles-Orleans presents the Annual Gala Minuit a Paris at the JW Marriott. The event features dinner and dancing, a silent auction, brandy tasting by Martin's Wine Cellar and a raffle of French wines.

Also on Friday the 22nd is the long-awaited local premiere of the stage version of “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” at the Joy Theater downtown. Produced and directed by Big Easy Award winner Tommye Myrick and featuring a stellar cast of local actors, “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” will run for six performances over two weekends, with Friday and Saturday evening shows and Sunday matinees. See the calendar below for more details.

On Saturday, February 23, the New Orleans Ballet Association is presenting the Aspen Santa Fe Ballet at the Mahalia Jackson Theater. On Sunday, February 24, it is Oscar Night and what better way to see it than at Louisiana's Only Official Oscar-Viewing Party. Oscar Experience New Orleans and the American Red Cross South Louisiana Region come together again for the 85th Academy Awards telecast. The Red Cross and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, in partnership with The Theatres at Canal Place and WGNO ABC26 New Orleans, will roll out the red carpet at The Theatres at Canal Place. The evening is an occasion to celebrate both the red carpet and the Red Cross, for nearly 100 years a partner in serving the humanitarian needs of the Greater New Orleans region. The event is made possible through the generous support of their corporate sponsors. See calendar below for more information.

This weekend, The Historic New Orleans Collection will open its latest exhibition, “Seeking the Unknown: Natural History Observations in Louisiana, 1698–1840,” which displays the mystery and romance of Louisiana’s early scientific expeditions. Visitors to the free exhibition can relive Louisiana’s landscape as the first explorers would have experienced it, including centuries-old native plants and animals, such as a bobcat, cougar and wild turkey, and several detailed drawings, watercolors and illustrated folios. Opening Saturday, Feb. 23, at 533 Royal St., Seeking the Unknown will be available to the public Tuesday–Saturday, 9:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m., and Sunday, 10:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.

On Tuesday, we will be welcoming the New Orleans premiere of FlashDance, the musical stage adaptation of the 1983 hit film that defined a generation. A production of Broadway in New Orleans, it will be staged at the Mahalia Jackson Theater , for a limited six-night engagement.

And, just to give you all a little heads-up, March is Cabaret Month at the Mid-City Theatre. Some of my favorite local actors, singers and comedians are going to be performing there, many of them veterans of the now-closed Le Chat Noir, and I can hardly wait to see them on stage again. My darling friends from Le Chat, Barbara Motley and Su Gonczy, are producing this exciting series of events. I’ll have more details and a full lineup in my column next week but you might want to consider reserving your seats now. They’re expected to go very fast as word gets out there. Call the theatre at 488-1460 or visit their website at http://www.midcitytheatre.com/.

On a final and, unfortunately, sad note, we lost a longtime, much-beloved fixture on the local dance scene last week: Gwen Delle Giacobbe, wife of Delta Festival Ballet co-founder Joseph Giacobbe, and sister in law of the other co-founder, Maria Giacobbe. Mentor to many dancers and loved by them all, she is going to be greatly missed. My condolences to the members of this wonderful family who have contributed so much to our cultural heritage. who have contributed so much to our cultural heritage.

I also just heard that businessman Steven Latter, longtime owner of Tujaque Restaurant passed away.

Steven was a pillar of our community and will be missed by all his friends and costumers. My condolences to his family.A funeral service will be held Wednesday, Feb. 20, at 1 p.m. at Gates of Prayer, 4000 W. Esplanade Ave. Metairie. Visitation will be at noon, and the burial will be private.
