Obama Says BP Spill Close To End, But Drilling Moratorium No End In Sight
Written by  {ga=admin} // Wednesday, 04 August 2010 17:16 //

While President Barack Obama said that BP had reached a “significant milestone" in its efforts to permanently seal the Deepwater Horizon well, one of the major damages resulting from the oil spill has not been greeted with such optimism.

Today, Obama said, "The long battle is finally close to coming to an end, and we are very pleased with that," Obama was referring to the success of the “static kill” procedure that has further weakened a spewing oil well in the Gulf of Mexico,

However, in New Orleans, matters were not so cheery.  Michael Bromwich who is now the director of the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement when questioned by Louisiana and local government officials about the further existence of the deep oil drilling moratorium in the same gulf,  the Obama administration official overseeing the moratorium and other related matters said “lifting the moratorium is "not ripe."

Bromwich further said his agency needs additional time to finalize safety regulations that would be rolled out in weeks.  He also said it was unlikely that his agency would make recommendations about shortening the moratorium while the public forums across the nation are occurring.

The event today at Tulane University kicked off his series of public meetings which will take place in designated cities across the nation.
