Accordiing to WWL-TV, the station, "acquired the letter on Thursday, dated July 25. Benson wrote to Times-Picayune owner Steven Newhouse that he would “welcome the opportunity to speak to you about my interest in purchasing the Times-Picayune, with others.”
However, Newhouse wrote in an e-mail to the station saying that the newspaper is not for sale.
Benson’s letter comes as the Times-Picayune is going through major cutbacks, including reducing its print schedule to only three days per week starting this fall. The newspaper also has planned to lay off more than 200 employees by Sept. 30.
Benson wrote that he “struggles with this decision” for the newspaper to be published three days a week, and believes that the city should have a newspaper that prints news every day.
“The city of New Orleans is a city of immense culture, economic growth and host to millions of people annually; it is a nationally and internationally recognized city,” he wrote. “It is a city deserving of a seven day a week newspaper.”
The Baton Rouge Advocate has announced that it would be entering the New Orleans market.
Two other efforts are also on way to compete with the TP.
For weeks, there have been rumors that Benson might try to buy the paper. there have been comments on blogs and newsgroups that have appluded this possibility. Others feel that the the owner of the Saints and Hornets, the Fox affiliate WVUE and a major building next to the Dome is turning the city into Benson Town.
