Louisiana Sports: LSU, Les Miles, West Virginia, Patrick Robinson, Tulane

staton1When LSU takes the field on Saturday, the Tigers will do so against a West Virginia team that features a pair of offensive standouts in running back Noel Devine and quarterback Geno Smith and against the Mountaineers defense that will be unlike any that the Tigers will see this season.

They host the 21st-ranked Mountaineers at 8 p.m on Saturday in Tiger Stadium in a game that will be nationally televised by ESPN2. LSU, ranked as high as No. 12 in the nation, brings a 4-0 over-all mark into the game following last week's 29-7 win over Mississippi State. West Virginia, also 3-0, is coming off a 31-17 victory over Maryland.

"We've had a good week of preparation," said Tigers coach Les Miles. "West Virginia is a good, quality football team and we are going to have to come ready to play  I think our team understands that."

Mountaineers coaches look for LSU to test their secondary. West Virginia's young cornerbacks have been punching bags this season and have given several home run bombs.

But with Jordan Jefferson at quarterback, the Tigers have shown no inclination toward throwing the ball deep so far this season. You can expect them to take a few shots against the Mountaineers.

"They're going to throw the ball down the field," said Mountaineers secondary coach Dave Lockwood. "They'll max protect and throw the ball down the field. I would."

Miles said tight end Deangelo Peterson returned to practice this week after missing the first three games with a foot injury. He will play on Saturday. Running back Richard Murphy is expected to play on Saturday.

LSU's Tiger Stadium is the loudest college football stadium in the country, according to a ranking by Bleacherreport.com.  Writes the website: "Tiger Stadium nicknamed 'Death Valley' is as loud as they come, particularly for a night game. With a seating capacity of more than 92,000, it's the seventh-largest on-campus college football stadium in the country. The nickname, originally 'deaf valley', is in reference to the truly deafening sounds produced by the crowd. Of course, there's the legendary 'Earthquake Game' where in 1988 the crowd noise during a game-winning touchdown against Auburn registered as a legitimate earthquake on the seismograph in the LSU Geological Survey office on campus, Bear Brant once said Tiger Stadium was the 'worst place in the world to be a visiting team because playing there is like playing in a drum.'"

The SEC lists its power ratings for league quarterbacks, but LSU's Jordan Jefferson isn't even listed. Jefferson is 10th in the SEC in passing efficiency, but throwing for only 344 yards this season will not land you in the power ratings...

LSU's Patrick Robinson ranks among the nation' best cornerbacks and is favored to win the Jim Thorpe Award in December. He has been named to several preseason All-American teams.

If he skips his senior at LSU and enters the NFL draft, he'll probably be one of the top 10 picks.

He has good size for a corner at 6-foot-1 and 214-pounds, runs a 4.37 40-yard dash, squats with 535 pounds and bench presses 335, very high for defensive backs. He also has a 39-inch vertical jump.

He wanted to return punts for the Tigers this season and leads the SEC in this department .

To improve himself before the beginning of the season, he jogged three miles, worked on his hand placement, hand speed and pad level to help with his press coverage. He also works with younger players so they play on the SEC level.

He bought a boxing sped bag in the spring because he thought his hands were a little slow last season. It hangs in his apartment.

He doesn't watch many others corners on the college level, but prefers to study NFL coroners like Champ Baily, Tracy Porter, Charles Woodson and Asante Samuel

His father played corner when he was younger and he always advised me to go out and play and none of the hype you get matters.

He told the young defensive backs there is a still a lot of work to do because it's tough in the SEC, not like high school.

Patrick said the Tigers goal this season is to finish the season like the Tigers it, with a win at Atlanta. "We believe we have a chance to make it back to Atlanta and hope we win the SEC championship," said  Peterson. "You do that, you clinch a spot in the national championship, We're young, but confident."

Les Miles

LSU coach Les Miles is on the hot seat because his SEC record is 8-8 over the past two seasons. Tigers boosters wonder if he's he right guy for the job.

Peterson says he hears the talk about Miles all the time, but believes Miles is the man for the job. "He recruited me (out of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.)," said Peterson. "and I liked him because he's an up-front guy. There are a lot of tough teams on our schedule, and we've got to come to play. That's why Coach Miles has been so big on finishing games. We can't let any slip away for us and for him."

SOME HITHER, OTHERS YOUNG: West Virginia becomes the first Big East team to play in Tiger Stadium when they oppose LSU at 8 on Saturday night. Two Mountaineers players from Alabama are looking forward to the game. WVU special teamer Trippe Hale, from Mobile, on playing in Tiger Stadium: "Those people down there live and die with football. Playing at LSU is a lot to look forward to. I've been to quite a few games there. My best friend played at LSU. They try to intimidate you. It's serious stuff. For us, we have to try and be ready for the environment, and have fun with it. You  don’t play in many atmospheres like that." Said Mountaineers receiver Coley White of Daphe, Ala: "They're good fans, and it's very, very loud. People hype it because it's SEC football and football is really big down there."...

Tulane Football

Freshman Terrance Broadway of Capitol High in Baton Rouge will start for the Houston Cougars  (2-1, 1-0 CUSA) when they entertain the Tulane Green Wave (1-1) on Saturday at Robertson Stadium at 2:30 p.m.

The decision to star Broadway came after Heisman Trophy candidate Case Kellum suffered a torn ACL and backup Cotton Turner suffered a broken clavicle in a 31-13 defeat at UCLA at the Rose Bowl.

Broadway arrived at Houston touted by Rivals.com as a four-star prospect and the No. 5 dual-threat prospect in the nation.

Houston appears to be vulnerable with a freshman making his first start and the Tulane defense likely will test a freshman making his first start.
