Louisiana Politics: Pledge To America Means Pledge To Hurt Small Business
Written by  {ga=staffwriters}

As you've no doubt heard, the Republicans have offered a "new" Pledge to America that they call "a new governing agenda focused on addressing the American people’s top priorities."  Congressman "Millionaire" John Fleming issued a comment including the following:

The Pledge to America represents an agenda set by the American people, not by tone-deaf leaders in Washington. From creating jobs to reining in spending to fixing a dysfunctional Congress,  this pledge embraces bold solutions, a commitment to our founding principles, and a dismantling of ‘business as usual’ in Washington.

There is plenty to say about how ridiculous this is.  Thank goodness we have Jon Stewart to do it for us.

Contrary to Fleming's assertion that this is a document of the people, there are reports that a former lobbyist was one of its chief authors.  Further, the pledge has received a lukewarm response at best from even conservative leaders.  In short, the political ploy that the GOP calls a "pledge" seems to be going nowhere.

But the real kicker is that on the same day that the Pledge was announced containing 18 references to small businesses, Fleming and the Republicans voted against the Small Business Jobs Act.  Did you get that?  They traveled to a small business to announce their pledge, then returned to Capitol Hill to vote against a small business bill.

So, we know where John Fleming stands.  He stands with his Party and its silly pledge that is entirely about politics and not with the small businesses in the 4th District that need help to get back on their feet.

Meanwhile, his Democratic challenger David Melville said the following in response to the legislation:

Small businesses are the backbone of our economy here in Northwest Louisiana, and we must do all we can to support them. I applaud Congress for passing this vital legislation to help put folks back to work and support American businesses.

Let's just hope that the voters in Northwest Louisiana can figure out who is really on their side before heading to the polls on November 2nd.
