Another fabulous Christmas in New Orleans has gone by. There is definitely no place like my beloved New Orleans for the holidays and, as such, I enjoyed thoroughly what my adopted city has to offer.
On Tuesday, I attended the lighting of the marquee at the Joy Theatre on Canal Street, which will officially open its doors on Thursday, December 29 (see below for details). Not to be missed! And I am happy to say that my darling friends Sandie McNamara and Bill Johnston, formerly with Harrah’s Casino, both have good jobs at the Joy. Sandie is in charge of sales and Bill is handling the booking of live shows. Some wonderful shows are lined up already for the theater’s first month of operations.
Tuesday night was also the opening of the spectacular Cirque Dreams Holidaze show. I truly enjoyed the talented, colorfully costumed, international cast who provided a dazzling spectacle. I loved meeting, backstage at the end of the show, Mexico-born Jeronimo Garcia-Medina who, with his well-toned muscular body, provided the breathtaking aerial acrobatics.
On Wednesday, I attended the Royal Sonesta Christmas Party at the Intercontinental Hotel, as well as the Republic Beverage Soiree at the Bar at Jax Brewery. Of course, there was another one and that was the annual Christmas Party for Jazz on Taps. It was just wonderful and I am glad that I made all of them.
On Friday, December 23, it was time to stop by Galatoire’s and share a glass of champagne with my friends who paid a lot of money for those tables. I was grateful to be invited by my darling friend Debbie Alciatore to join her at her table. It was so much fun and hope you will enjoy the photos from the fabulous event.
Of course that day after taking a nap, it was time to attend the annual NOCCA's “Home for the Holidays” at the House of Blues. It was the best concert that I have been to in a long time and I am so proud to attend an event that gathered up the most talented New Orleans musicians under one roof and for a great cause. Please make that you put it in your calendar to attend "Home for the Holidays" next year.
It is part of my Latin heritage to celebrate "Noche Buena" on December 24, and I was invited by my friends, Gordon and Josie Patton to celebrate my heritage at a lovely luncheon. Also that evening I had a nice visit with my darling friends Harry Greenberger and multi-talented Marshall Harris and their friends. By Christmas Day, I was ready to rest and as such I did.
Before I share what this week has to offer, I want to mention the passing of a great lady: Mrs. Lois Hawkins passed away on Sunday December 18. Lois was a past President of the New Orleans Opera Association and a longtime generous supporter of the Opera. Her late husband, H. Lloyd Hawkins, Jr., and his father, H. Lloyd Hawkins, Sr., were Opera Association Presidents before her. The Hawkins family's support of the opera, dating back forty years, is commemorated in the name of the Association's H. Lloyd Hawkins Scenic Studio in Metairie where the opera’s sets are built and stored. Lois is best remembered, however, for the sweetness of her disposition and her great love for the opera performances that her support helped to reach the stage. She will be greatly missed.
WE are also mourning the death of local actress Heidi Junius' father. May his soul rest in peace!
This week is going to very special as well. I am starting my week on Tuesday by hosting my every other week Toasting with Margarita. I would like to invite for a drink at Le Booze from 5:30 to 7 p.m. where my friends and I are going to reminisce about this past year and our expectations for 2012 while sipping delicious wine and cocktails. I hope you will be able to join me.
Darlings, if you are still in a Christmas mood, I’d like to invite you to come by the J.W. Marriott this Wednesday, December 28, between 5:30 and 8:00 p.m. You will be entertained by Suzaune & Company, singing some of your favorite songs with the fabulous Harry Mayronne on piano. You can also look at (and buy if you need a late present) some of the art from Casell Gallery presented by yours truly. And why not toast the season with a glass of wine (and some cheese), compliments of the J.W. Marriott. And remember -- it's no fun without you!
On Thursday, I am looking forward to the reopening of the Joy Theatre with performances by Grammy Award-winning singer Irma Thomas and fabulous saxophonist Lance Ellis. On Friday, December 30 The Soul Rebels and Cyril Neville's Tribe 13 will be performing there and, on Saturday, December 31 at 9 p.m., Kermit Ruffins and the Barbecue Swingers plus special guest Big Sam's Funky Nation kick in the New Year.

And, as a special request, please vote for New Orleans in the Southern Living magazine’s annual readers’ poll for the “Tastiest Town in the South.” Our city is in the Top Ten and the voting continues until January 31. The results will be announced on March 23. If you love our fabulous New Orleans food as much as I do you’ll go to the following link and cast your vote.
You can vote more than once, just as long as it’s not on the same day. And please pass this on to all of your friends, especially those who have extensive email address books. Like the Saints and the Tigers, it’s important that we win this.
