Occupy Tea Party
The League of Women Voters of Baton Rouge's monthly Lunch With the League (LWL) public forum will be held Thursday, 1/19/11 at Drusilla Place, registration at 11:30, program begins at Noon. Panelists from the Baton Rouge Tea Party and Occupy LA will discuss will discuss the concerns and solutions of their respective organizations.
The LWVBR's goal is to provide a public forum which presents all points of view and potential solutions, so that the audience can leave in a position to make an informed decision of their own.
Confirmed panelists in alphabetical order are:
* Rebecca Favre, Baton Rouge Tea Party
* Delia LaBarre, Occupy LA
* Alison McCray, Occupy LA
* John Michael Thibodeaux. Baton Rouge Tea Party
Both of these organizations have similar concerns about challenges which effect citizen taxpayers in two broad areas: 1) budget, international affairs and defense spending and 2) healthcare, Medicare, and Social Security, but different solutions.
This is an opportunity for LA Citizens to hear the both sides of the story.
Is there some common ground between these very motivated citizen organizations?
Finding that common ground and working together could move the country closer to developing long term solutions and alternatives.

PSC Commissioner Skrmetta
“Louisiana Public Service Commissioner Eric Skrmetta will hold a Town Hall meeting in St Tammany Parish on Monday, January 30, from 5:30-6:30 pm at the St Tammany Parish Council Chambers located at 21490 Koop Drive, Mandeville, 70448. This meeting is being held as a courtesy to the citizens of St Tammany Parish to voice their concerns about any issues related to utility companies operating in the area. Consumers who are experiencing difficulties with a utility company are encouraged to attend. Commissioner Skrmetta and his staff will be on hand to answer questions.
Jindal and the National school Choice Week
Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal who has announced his legislative plan to reform the state’s schools is one of the governor’s participating in National School Choice week.
The governors of 12 states have signed proclamations officially recognizing January 22nd through 28th as National School Choice Week, organizers of the week announced today.
The following governors have issued proclamations in support of the week:
• Gov. Robert Bentley of Alabama
• Gov. John Hickenlooper of Colorado
• Gov. Nathan Deal of Georgia
• Gov. Mitch Daniels of Indiana
• Gov. Bobby Jindal of Louisiana
• Gov. Paul LePage of Maine
• Gov. Rick Snyder of Michigan
• Gov. Mary Fallin of Oklahoma
• Gov. Tom Corbett of Pennsylvania
• Gov. Gary Herbert of Utah
• Gov. Bob McDonnell of Virginia
• Gov. Scott Walker of Wisconsin
Additionally, Mayor Michael Hancock of Denver, Colorado and Mayor Jim Reynolds of Eagle, Idaho have signed proclamations recognizing the week.
Organizers said they expected governors of at least five additional states and other cities to sign proclamations by the end of National School Choice Week.
National School Choice Week – a series of hundreds of events shining a spotlight on the need for better educational options for children, will kick off at a special event in New Orleans, Louisiana on January 21, 2012. Over the following seven days more than 250 events will take place in every corner of the nation. Everyone from children, parents, teachers, and community leaders – to celebrities, sports figures, elected officials, and more – will participate in this unprecedented bipartisan commemoration.
