...politicians who sell out to teachers unions, or large financial institutions .. then bailout these unions and institutions when their greed and/or stupidity get them in a bind. That - I suppose - is 'better' or 'okay' since this is how politicians in YOUR party sell out their constituents who are neither members of big banking or unions? That may be your idea of a "noble politician" - but to me "selling out" is "selling out" regardless of who the politician is favoring due to campaign contributions. The idea that any politician favors the poor is a cruel joke; they only act like they support the poor to keep these poor folks dependent upon "the nobel benevolent politician." That's just another form of slavery.

Unfortunately, Louisiana politicians have sold the state out to the oil industry for campaign contributions and some people are too blind to see that.

Plane crashes happen, car wrecks happen, accidents on production platforms and drilling rigs happen. People like you would have us living in the stone age due to "lives lost" due to electrocution. We have 40 to 45 thousand American men, women and children SMEARED all over our highways each and every year. So what? Tough tamale. We're not going to go back to the stone age simply due to a few tens of thousands of deaths each and every year. Like I said .. get real.

You can understand why Florida opposes offshore driling and why it never should be allowed in the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge. You can no longer say that BP is some rogue company. We're seeing the results of the lack of regulatory oversight that occurred during the Bush/Cheney Administration.

Rig?

I don't think it was a drilling "rig" - I think it was a production platform. The main difference is once a rig drills a well and 'completes" it and turns it over to production it is far more secure due to a valve - at least 500 feet below the mud line - held open with hydralic pressure (SCSSV - "surface controlled sub-surface safety valve"). That way - even if the structure is completely destroyed - the valve will close on loss of hydralic fluid pressure and prevent oil and gas from spewing out as it could on a well that has not been "completed."
