According to White House press secretary in a news briefing, Robert Gibbs, the Marine Energy Gulf Coast platform that exploded thursday morning is not active.
Gibbs also said the platform was in shallow waters. Gibbs said he did not have sufficient information and did not want to respond to issues regarding the Gulf coast BP deepwater oil moratorium.
The Marine Energy platform exploded about 100 miles south of Vermillion Bay in Louisiana. Reports are that 13 workers were on the platform.
It is uncertain if there is any leak of oil or gas since the platform was reportedly inactive.
Mariner Energy’s web site states that “Mariner Energy is one of the leading independent oil and gas exploration and production companies in the Gulf of Mexico. At December 31, 2009, the company had interests approximately 240 blocks on the continental shelf and 100 blocks in deepwater. About 85% of the company’s production comes from offshore, with a growing share of that coming from deepwater developments such as Geauxpher, Bass Lite and Northwest Nansen.”
