In version 2.0 of my Saints' mock draft, I have the black and gold selecting BYU outside linebacker Kyle Van Noy.

I've been high on Van Noy since January and now others are jumping on board. ESPN draft insider Mel Kiper recently moved Van Noy to his top 25 big board and Van Noy is starting to appear in the first round of mock drafts.

That said, with the 27th overall pick, the Saints could go in a number of directions.

Sorrento police chief bill clears Senate

Wednesday, 16 April 2014 13:31

The Louisiana Senate quickly approved legislation Wednesday that would allow the elected Sorrento police chief position to be abolished.

The Senate voted 36-0 for the measure by state Sen. Jody Amedee, R-Gonzales.

The legislation comes in the wake of the resignation of Sorrento’s Police Chief Earl Theriot Jr.

Theriot had been at the center of controversy since his police department lost liability and vehicle insurance last fall. The Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office has been providing police patrols for the town.

The state’s top school board would be prohibited from approving charter schools in districts rated A, B or C under a bill that won narrow approval Wednesday in the House Education Committee.

The vote was 8-7.

The proposal, House Bill 703, would apply in cases where the school was rejected by the local school board.

It next faces action in the full House.

State Rep. John Bel Edwards, D-Amite and sponsor of the plan, said the change would reward school districts that are operating well under Louisiana’s letter grade system.

Joey Caillouet misses those standing lunch dates that he, and even some of his co-workers, would enjoy every Tuesday with his mother, Elsie, at her Old Hammond Highway condominium.

“Not just a ham sandwich. She’d cook a meal. She wouldn’t take no money. She loved doing it,” Caillouet, 63, of Central, reminisced at the Miley Law Firm on Tuesday — a day after a jury awarded her family more than $1 million.

“She was great. I wish everybody in the world could have a mama like her,” said Caillouet, a recently retired East Baton Rouge Parish sheriff’s deputy.

The Louisiana Legislature is rarely a place where logical arguments are presented, but an argument Sen. Robert Adley of Benton made in opposition to a local levee board's suit against Big Oil is particularly perplexing. Adley authored the bill that would kill the lawsuit that the Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority-East filed against almost 100 oil and gas companies they say contributed to the destruction of the Louisiana coastline without making amends.
