NEW YORK – Poor New York City immigrants who otherwise would have faced the complicated immigration system with its threat of deportation on their own will now get legal representation to help them. It's due to a program advocates say is the first of its kind in the country.

The New York Immigrant Family Unity Project will cover all eligible immigrant city residents detained in the system and appearing in immigration courts in New York City or the New Jersey cities of Elizabeth and Newark.

A House panel has approved a proposal to rename the street that runs in front of the Chinese Embassy in Washington after an imprisoned dissident, drawing a sharp response from Beijing. 

On Monday, the House Appropriations Committee approved an amendment to its State Department budget for fiscal year 2015 that would rename a stretch of International Place in Northwest Washington to "Liu Xiaobo Plaza.

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Baton Rouge Mayor Kip Holden will ask the Metro Council for a midyear budget supplement of $3.3 million dollars Wednesday.

Half of that would go for new fire trucks and equipment. It also includes sidewalk improvements on College Drive and Gardere Lane and turning lane projects for Mickens, Joor, and Hooper Roads.
