Advocate staff report

The United Blood Services in Louisiana has announced it is in urgent need of Type O blood donors, part of a national trend to step up donations in the last weeks of August.

According UBS, someone in the U.S.

needs blood every two to three seconds.

UBS noted that both negative and positive Type O blood are in high demand because O-negative blood can match up with any blood type for patients in an emergency. O-positive blood is also the most common blood type, with 37 percent of the population having it, while O-negative blood is also used by neonatal care facilities to treat infants, according to UBS.

To make the most of their donation, Type O donors who are eligible can do an apheresis donation, which doubles the number of red blood cells.
