Madison schools chief Jennifer Cheatham: Political 'noise' on Common Core not helpful

Jennifer Cheatham, Madison Metropolitan School District superintendent, on Monday called the politics around the Common Core educational standards “noise” that is not helping schools improve student performance.

“It is not helpful for our improvement efforts,” Cheatham said. “The Common Core standards have helped our district set a more clear and high bar for what we want our students to achieve. I think that’s been very helpful for our teachers, our students and our families.

Cheatham made the remarks in response to a question at a Monday news conference called to showcase improvement one year into a strategic plan to improve student achievement and close race and income-based gaps.

A district-wide report on student progress under the plan is available here. Data for indivdual schools can be accessed here.
