An explanation of Common Core

It's become a formula to try and achieve academic success in Louisiana: Common Core.
However, it's a standard many still don't understand.

Bill Murphy has been doing his homework on Common Core since it was adopted by the state in 2010. He says first and foremost it's not a curriculum, it's expectations and only applies to math and reading literacy.

Social studies and science don't apply.

"The standards don't dictate what we read or how the questions are constructed," said Murphy. "They really just dictate what is the kid about to do and how hard should the problem be."

For instance, when it comes to math, Common Core says kindergarteners should be able to add and subtract numbers 1 through 5 before entering first grade.
