Caroline Roemer Shirley wears dual hats when it comes to Common Core Standards: Executive Director of the Louisiana Association of Charter Schools, and a mom to her son, Owen.
"As a parent, what i want to know is are we preparing Owen? Are we preparing all our students, not just for college, but for life in general," said Shirley.
When it comes to cutting through the standards, Shirley says she is looking to one person for help, her son's teacher.
"I think that's your best resource as a parent. I'm not a teacher. I'm the mom of a 6-year-old. So i'm going to work with Ms. Turner to see what i can be doing at home on a regular basis," Shirley said.
One of the top things William Murphy, with New Orleans College Prep, says parents do at home is carve out reading time each day to encourage critical thinking.
