Students face Common Core standards

Common Core State Standards will be fully implemented in Guam public schools starting this school year, replacing Department of Education Standards that have been in place since 1999.

The Common Core standards are a set of benchmarks that measure what children should know at each grade level in both English and Math.

Initiated and developed by state education chiefs and governors in 48 states, the Common Core standards focus on college and career readiness based on international expectations.

"The standards ensure that every classroom, every school, every grade level is getting the same level of education and shooting to the same standards," said Guam Department of Education Superintendent Jon Fernandez.

Before Common Core was introduced in schools two years ago, schools were following DOE standards.

DOE standards measured performance in nine content areas in English, math, science, social studies, language arts and reading, visual and performing arts, world languages, health, physical education and computer education.
