New Orleans - A New Orleans murder victim's family is choosing to use his death, to help others. The family of Dinerral Shavers hope music and education will save lives in the city.
At the Ashe Cultural Center Saturday, music from the To Be Continued Brass Band filled the air.
With children dancing and singing, Nakita Shavers says this is the scene her brother, Dinerral, would have wanted to see. Nakita organized this school supply giveaway and health fair, in honor of her brother, who was murdered in 2006.
Dinerral Shavers was a high school music teacher and member of the Hot 8 Brass Band. He was passionate about education reform, and keeping kids safe. He was shot to death while riding in a car with his wife and kids. Police said at the time he was not the intended target of the gunman. After his death, Nakita started the Dinerral Shavers educational fund and each year, invites kids from all over the community to her back to school giveaway.
Parent Tina Haines, who brought her five-year-old daughter to the event says, "I think an event like this will help the kids, get them off the street and they can meet people, they can learn different things and they have something positive in their life."
This is the 5th year Nakita organized a back to school bash.
