New Orleans, La. - Surveillance cameras across the city are catching more criminals in the act.
One of the latest attacks was a bold armed robbery early Monday night, in a typically busy area of the French Quarter just off Bourbon Street.
Video shows a white car stopping in the 800 block of Dumaine at 9:20 p.m. Monday. An armed man gets out of the vehicle and runs toward an unsuspecting woman. He then grabs her purse while pointing a semi-automatic pistol at her face before jumping back into the waiting car.
"Most people are walking around quite happily at that time of night," said Bob Sims with the French Quarter Management District's Security Task Force. "It was a little brazen, and yeah, it was a little surprising it was so early."
Simms lives a couple of blocks from the crime scene.
"I looked on my own security cameras at my house," he said. "I saw the same car driving by two minutes before, and then I went backwards a little bit in time and I saw the same car again 10 minutes before that. I went backwards again and saw the same car 10 minutes before that. So, they clearly were driving around looking for a victim."
Simms and others in the French Quarter point out that these types of crimes are being caught on camera more frequently as 1,200 residents and businesses have made their footage available to the NOPD through the SafeCams8 program.
