A body pulled from Lake Pontchartrain Tuesday morning has been identified as the driver of a pickup that went over the railing of the southbound Lake Pontchartrain Causeway Monday afternoon. The driver has been identified as Miguel Rodriguez, 19, of Metairie.
Rodriguez's body was found in the lake near the south shore and the site where his truck entered the lake. It was brought to Bonnabel boat launch, where the Jefferson Parish Coroner's Office was waiting.
Friends of Rodriguez who were at the boat launch Tuesday said Rodriguez was the driver of the pickup involved in the crash.
The Ford F-250 pickup Rodriguez was driving plunged into the lake around two miles from the south shore around 4 p.m. Monday. Shortly after the truck went into the lake, Rodriguez appeared at the water's surface and told a witness on the bridge that he was OK and was alone in his truck. But several seconds later, he disappeared beneath the water, the witness told authorities Monday.
Crews from the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office and Coast Guard searched for the missing driver. The truck was located Monday night, but authorities did not find the driver. Their search for him resumed Tuesday morning.
Monday's accident marked the 10th time in the past 20 years that a vehicle went over the guardrail and into the lake on the southbound span of the Causeway.
