NEW ORLEANS -- After the ribbon was cut, the doors and opened and the band played on.
Hundreds of residents in Gentilly welcomed a new Walmart back to the neighborhood after years of anticipation.
Mayor Mitch Landrieu said, “This is creating jobs, has economic impact, and there is not greater impact than this so Walmart congratulations."
The new store will bring in more than 300 jobs to the area that is looking to make an economic boom since Hurricane Katrina's wrath 9 years ago.
A resident nicknamed “Mayor” Gordon said, “For this community, it is a long awaited project. It was the most important project we saw into brining this community back. Once they learned it was coming back, we started rebuilding the homes in Gentilly Woods.”
For many residents here, shopping choices were slim and far away.
