NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -
The highly anticipated New Orleans East hospital is complete and ready to serve the people of New Orleans East, Gentilly and the Lower 9th Ward.
For nine years since Hurricane Katrina, there's been a real need for a full service hospital in the area.
The New Orleans East hospital included a $130 million renovation. According to the city, the hospital project created 300 jobs during the construction phase.
Now, it creates 150 new permanent jobs.
It is an 80 bed full service hospital. It began taking patients in July as it waited for accreditation. It has that now which allows the hospital to receive Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement for services provided.
The hospital is much more than healthcare for the community. It was toted Wednesday as the catalyst for an economic boom for New Orleans East.
There was a call for people who live in the area to think about opening their own business near the hospital.
