Excessive heat watch in effect for Southeast Louisiana

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) -

Temperatures are expected to rise to dangerous levels this weekend in Southeast Louisiana and along the gulf coast.

The National Weather Service announced an excessive heat watch from Saturday afternoon to Sunday night.

The NWS defines an excessive heat watch as a prolonged period of hot temperatures and high humidity that will combing to create a dangerous situation in which heat-related illnesses are possible.

Temperatures are expected to reach the mid 90s today and the upper 90s Sunday afternoon.

The NWS says that the high temperatures are a result of a large area of high pressure that settled over the gulf states, suppressing clouds and rainfall. The NWS said that with little cooling expected overnight, the hot temperatures Sunday could become "life threatening."
