New Orleans Area Events: October 21 And On

Buzz Right Back----E-Mail a Friend----Print Page

Darling friends,

Don’t you just love this glorious weather?

I spent Saturday morning judging the scarecrow contest at the Botanical Garden where the Fall Garden Show was taking place. I have never seen the garden looking so pretty. We had so many creative and scary scarecrows that made it very difficult to select the winners, but I loved being in the garden.

I also enjoyed very much the opening of the Opera Season with Puccini’s Manon Lescaut and cannot wait for Mozart’s Don Giovanni on November 14 and 16 at Tulane’s McAlister Auditorium. This will be the last opera at Tulane, now that the Mahalia Jackson Theater of the Performing Arts is scheduled to reopen in January with a gala concert headlined by Placido Domingo. Tickets are on sale for that event on January 17, and you know I am not going to miss it. Call the opera at 529-2278 to reserve your seats.

In addition, I got to spend a few minutes at the Chinchuba Institute KidSpeak Learning Center’s fundraiser, “Look Who’s Talking Now,” this past Saturday night. I wished I could have stayed longer because I saw a lot of my dear friends there and everyone looked like they were having a great time being entertained by Benny Grunch and the Bunch and Becky Allen.

This week is going to another extraordinary week full of social/cultural activities such as Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra’s presentation of Ibarra’s “Cello Concerto No 1,” Faure’s “Elegy” and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 “Eroica” on Thursday, Oct 23 and Friday Oct 24 at First Baptist Church, New Orleans. Maestro Carlos Miguel Prieto is going to be conducting his father, famous cellist Carlos Prieto..

Also later this week, Ballet Hispanico heats up the stage for the premiere of the 2008 Season of Dance for the New Orleans Ballet Association with colorful, entertaining and stylish dances that are inspired by many cultures of Latin America. Performances at 8 p.m. at Dixon Hall, Tulane University, October 24 and 25. For tickets call 504-522-0996, ext 201 or visit www.nobadance.com .

On Friday, October 24 NOCCA Institute will be the beneficiary of an Opening Day party for Macy’s at Lakeside Shopping Center in Metairie. Martha Stewart and Chef Emeril Lagasse will serve as honorary co-chairs for the star-studded cocktail gala. The evening will feature invited fashion designers Tommy Hilfiger, Clinton Kelly, Tyler Florence, Cat Cora and many more in an evening full of great food, music, fashion and fun. Tickets $150 and up. Call 504-940-2900 or visit www.nocca.com .

The much anticipated “Sentimental Journey” for the benefit of Longue Vue House and Gardens takes place on Oct 24 and 25 with a very special patron party on the 24th  at the lovely residence of Pixie and Jimmy Reiss on Audubon Place. Seven Vintners will be pouring wines from their reserve collection accompanied by food by Chef Susan Spicer of Bayona Restaurant.  Music by Ashé Son.  Cocktail attire requested.

The merriment continues the following night with “A Night in Old Havana,” theme for the elaborate black-tie gala on October 25, at the Riverview Ballroom at Kern Studios Entertainment Center, 1370 Port of New Orleans Place. The Gala includes a wine-pairing dinner, and live auction of 30 exclusive travel experiences. Food by Chef Philip DuBose of Asia de Cuba Mondrian of Los Angeles. Entertainment by Acoustic Swiftness and the Junkyard Saints  Tickets are $250 per person,. For more information, call 504-4888 ext 337 or email sj@longuevue.com .

But prior to all these major events, we have quite a few soirees that we do not want to miss, including Cinq a Sept, October 21, at the Southern Food and Beverage Museum (SoFAB) in the Riverwalk.  They are presenting live music, wine and food from 5-7 p.m.

After work, drop by the museum for live music by Armand St. Martin as they celebrate the release of his newest album, "Katrina Anthem."  He will be playing "Katrina Anthem" solo on the piano. Also enjoy complimentary hors d'oeuvres from South of the Border, and a cash wine bar provided by The Savvy Gourmet. Cinq a Sept guests receive 25% off all Southern Food and Beverage Museum merchandise. The first 50 attendees receive free admission. Call 504-569-0405 for more information.

The fun continues at SoFAB this Saturday at 2 p.m. with "Around the World in 80 Dinners: 50,000 Miles, 10 Countries, 800 Dishes, 1 Rogue Monkey." Cheryl and Bill Jamison, authors of Around the World in 80 Dinners, will offer a slide show as an entertaining look at the global culinary adventures and misadventures during their three-month trip.  They will also talk a bit about the Creole food they found in Bahia, Brazil, and its commonalities and differences with Louisiana's Creole heritage.

And talking about food, we have another post-Katrina milestone for the French Quarter. Cafe Sbisa, a fixture of New Orleans dining since 1899, reopened on Friday, October 17, under the experienced leadership of Chef-owner Glen Hogh. Cafe Sbisa will serve classic and updated Creole dishes, Wednesday through Sunday, 5:30-10 p.m. Located at 1011 Decatur Street in the French Market area, Cafe Sbisa occupies a historic 1820s ship-chandler's building.  It features a full bar, private dining areas for up to 250 people, two balconies and a patio.

Cafe Sbisa operated continuously until it was shuttered by Hurricane Katrina.  Glen Hogh has retained the historic look of the interior, as well as the original painting by New Orleans artist George Dureau. The casual, yet elegant three-story eatery has a traditional New Orleans feel with brick walls, exposed beams, antique mirrors and fixtures, dark wooden accents and a grand mahogany bar. The third floor, which will open in mid-November, is ideally suited for private dinners, receptions and corporate events. Check it out!
