Louisiana; Secede From The Union?

Written by: Jim Brown

Buzz Right Back----E-Mail a Friend----Print Page

We know that all good things have to come to an end.   In Louisiana, we have tried the statehood thing for 205 years, but “maybe it’s just not working out.”  Hey, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin has flirted with the same idea up in Alaska.  The federal government continues to shortchange Louisiana on virtually every federal program, from hurricane recovery funds to a fair shake on offshore oil royalties.  So since Sarah Palin has raised the issue, maybe we in Louisiana should start considering the option of seceding from the Union and becoming our own nation.

You have got to hand it to those folks in Alaska.  They have done a pretty shrewd job of figuring out how to lead the nation in raising taxes per capita, yet making the rest of the country pay for it.  Alaska is number one in spending for residents, and its tax burden is 2 1/2 times the national average per capita.  Its spending is twice the national average per capita.  Their trick up north is that Alaska’s government spends enormous sums on its own citizens, and taxes the rest of us to pay for it.

For all practical purposes, Alaska is an adjunct member of OPEC.  More than 89% of the state’s income is produced through four different taxes on oil and gas.  And consider this.  The state government takes three quarters of the value of a barrel of oil before the oil is permitted to leave the state.  Alaskans pay no income tax, no statewide sales tax, and no property tax.  And every a resident gets a yearly check for about $2000 from oil revenues, plus an additional $1200 confected by Sarah Palin last year to take advantage of rising oil prices.

The disparities of the two states, one north and one south, are dramatic when it comes to receiving federal funds from Washington.  A typical example is the comparison of federal reimbursement to nursing homes that take care of the poor under the Medicaid program.  The same patient that only receives $79 a day in Louisiana receives $317 per day in Alaska.   When it comes to federal highway funds, Alaska receives $1.30 for every dollar it sends to Washington as do other states like California and New York.  What’s Louisiana’s take?  A little over $.90 back for each dollar sent to the National Highway Fund.

They play hardball in Alaska, while in Louisiana, the state’s leadership for years has often been pictured sticking out their hat and almost begging for a handout. As Governor, Palin has carried on a flirtation with the Alaska Independence Party (AKIP), and her husband was a card carrying member for a number of years.   In an address to the party convention this past spring, Palin told the secessionists: “Keep up the good work.”

Palin has received her share of criticism for her secessionist sympathies.  The Washington Monthly recently said that the idea of succession is “un – American.”  Oh come on now.  Maybe those in the press that are taking pot shots at the Alaska Governor for considering secession need to brush up on their American history.  A good starting point might be the Declaration of Independence that clearly states:

“That these United colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent states…… and that, as free and Independent states, they have the full power to levy war, conclude peace, contract alliances, establish commerce, and do all of the things which Independent states may of right do.”

And what better source than Thomas Jefferson in his first inaugural address who declared, “if there be among us who would wish to dissolve this Union or to change its republican form, let them stand undisturbed as monuments of the safety with which error of opinion may be tolerated where reason is left free to combat it.”

It’s not just a phenomenon stirred up by the residents of the last frontier where there is a movement to break away from the Union.  This past July, according to a Zogby poll, more than 20% of US adults—one in five, about the same number of American colonists who supported revolt against England in 1775—agreed that “any state or region has the right to peaceably secede from the United States and become an independent republic.”  A number of polls in recent years have indicated that almost half of Louisiana citizens agree that “the United States system is broken and cannot be fixed by traditional two– party politics and elections.”

The bottom line is that Alaska shares the same abundance of natural resources as those found in Louisiana.  In fact, when you consider seafood, sulfur, agriculture and the largest port in America, the Bayou State has a lot more wealth beneath the ground, on the ground, and along its waterways than our compatriots up in the Yukon.  Alaska has rattled its sabers, stood up to big oil in behalf of its citizens, and demanded more than its fair share of the pie from the federal government.

In comparison, Louisiana has been groveling for years to get a bigger slice of the offshore oil payouts.  Louisiana officials declared a big victory last year when the feds agreed to give a pittance of $20 million a year for the next 10 years.  Alaska would have considered such a settlement chump change, and would probably have started a secession movement along with a wall around its borders.

Seceding from the Union and becoming its own nation might prove to be an attractive option for Louisiana.  If Mississippi wants to join us, we might even agree to create “a coastal nation of Louisissippi.”   The French would be appalled, but who cares.

As for leadership?  I would probably stick with Bobby Jindal as president.  But if LSU coach Les Miles pulls off another national championship, he would certainly be a contender.  If Lindy Boggs were a bit younger, she would be my first choice as Ambassador to the United States.  Harry Connick Jr. would fill the bill nicely. We would definitely need to bring back General Russel Honore’, who told me how much he loves Louisiana, as our Secretary of Defense.  A piece of cake here, since the US would be our protector, just like it is for Mexico and Canada.  And for free. Our national flag would be a combination of black and gold and purple and gold, and we would certainly want Randy Newman to write our national anthem.

Over the past 200 years, Louisiana has been in a marriage of convenience.  In 1913, the state entered this marriage with the rest of the US, and got a lot out of it.  They received access to the American markets, and the flow of goods through New Orleans.  It was a two way street and benefits flowed both ways.  But by the middle of the 20th century, the bargain disappeared.  Both the oil and the royalties flowed out of Louisiana with little to show in return.

So don’t knock Sarah Palin when she flirts with secession.  Alaska has cut a good deal for itself. Maybe Louisiana should rise up and do the same

LAS VEGAS - Thirteen years to the day after being acquitted of killing his wife and her friend in Los Angeles, O.J. Simpson was found guilty of robbing two sports-memorabilia dealers at gunpoint in a Las Vegas hotel room..... The 61-year-old former football star was convicted of all 12 counts late Friday after jurors deliberated for more than 13 hours. He released a heavy sigh as the charges were read and was immediately taken into custody..... Simpson, who went from American sports idol to celebrity-in-exile after his murder acquittal, could spend the rest of his life in prison...... Perhaps now America is getting back on the right track and focusing on proper things to do.... If we can survive the bailout..........................

Well, if imitation is a form of flattery, I guess I should be flattered.... And actually they shouldn't be white, they should be brown, the state bird is the brown pelican.....

I don’t know t-dub, that has got to be one of the stupidest wonderments I have ever seen you type… Why don’t you ask Oprah Winfrey where she would be if she had been born black and poor in urban America…… Oh wait a second, you have to be on a 2 year waiting list to ask her that…. Hey, how about any one of a couple of dozen black athletes that earns several million a year…. How about Snoop Doggie Dogg? How about Michael Jackson and his brothers? How about Otis Spunkmeyer? How about Percy Sledge? How about Eddie Murphy, or Redd Foxx? Or maybe even Richard Pryor? Or how about Bill Cosby? Or how about O.J. Simpson? How about Congressman William Jefferson? How about Pearl Bailey? How about Janet Jackson? In fact, I am curious as to what you definition of poor is……. Poor in spirit, poor in mind, poor in giving, poor character, poor in memory, ehhhhhhhh,,, Oh, and in as far as poor white folks that grew up in Appalachia? That is a fairly expansive region there T-dub.. Have you ever been there? Anyways, there is Junior Johnston, he lives up there just outside of Wilkesboro, sort of down the street when I am up there…… and there was Daniel Boone, and Davie Crockett, and there is that guy that owns famous Daves BBQ….. I think his name is Dave….. And of course the headquarters for Lowes is up there in Wilksboro, no, not Lowes Chinese Theater, that’s in LA…… I am talking about Lowes Hardware and Lumber…… The former Vice President is a pretty cool guy, I visit with him whenever I am in town. I sells new and used cars now……. Interesting hobby I suppose… And of course there was Joyce Kilmer, don’t know if you would know of him, and he was rich, in many different ways…. You ought to see the trees!!! I wonder if Dolly Parton or Minnie Pearl count? Loretta Lynn? Even though he was from Lynchburg, how about my favorite; Jack Daniel? How about June Carter? Are you sure you don’t want to use Melungeons instead of ‘poor applachians’? Abe Lincoln was one of those, so was Elvis (wasn’t too impressed when I wandered around Graceland, it was soooooooo 60’s)… Poor, that is sort of a strange position, in fact T-dub, I think it is poor of you to make such a poor showing in your poor retort….

How come all those little birds on the flag are white, Tee? Shouldn't that be corrected?

There, but for the grace of God, go I. Like I have said so many times before, ask yourself where you'd be if you were born black and poor in urban America, or, if you prefer, white and poor in Appalachia. You don't strike me as terribly bright, so I'm guessing you'd still be poor. TW

To Tee Dub, the flag poster shouldn't have use that "squawking dependents" insult. I'm sure he meant to say "the most needy among us."

I used to proudly fly my 'pelican' flag on my flag pole I built outside of my shop... Then one day I saw that it wasn't high enough, so, I made my flag pole higher.... I would long into the darkness of morning....... Designing, engineering, drafting, welding, fabricating.... Bustin' dat midnite oil...... And then one day, well, the inspiration just sort of went away....... Yeah, I gotta say, there is something grand when you go to a state and see their state symbol flying high..... Yeah, thanks all you wonderful governors of the past 3 administrations, this one included.... Jackasses....

I'm not bothering with research on flag heights, but I can tell you one thing for dam sure. Drive through Texas and see how many businesses and individuals proudly fly the Lone Star on their property. There are Texas state flags on poles, fences, barns, signs, everything. Then check how many people fly the Mama Pelican flag here in Louisiana. Except for a few public entities, it's nonexistent. I just think there is something about the lone star standing proudly for strength, independence, and self-reliance versus the gawky pelican dishing out sustenance to its squawking dependents that makes the difference.

No, Jim, Keep "You Are My Sunshine" as our National Anthem. And if Jimmie Davis were alive and much younger, and bringing us back to where we were in the early 60s when it came to oil. Hats off to Gov. Davis, Sen. Ellender, and President Jack Kennedy, all who cared for Louisiana. We won the Tidelands Dispute and had #1 Status in the Democratic Convention. TOPS!!! Louisiana Reigns, Louisiana First! Louisiana #1 in everything. We started downfalling in Congress in 1974. Mr. Jefferson, Mr. Truman, and Mr. Kennedy were our Presidents. GO TIGERS!

Alaska was purchased for 7 million + and Louisiana was purchased for around 23 million all total… Not a bad deal, and to think it was called Seward’s folly……..2006 Alaska Annual Oil Prod from oil wells. (Mbbl) 172,043.0 – 2006 Alaska Annual Gas Prod from gas wells. (MMcf) 2,938,317.2………. 2006 Louisiana Annual Oil Prod from oil wells. (Mbbl) 55,004.4 - 2006 Louisiana Annual Gas Prod. From gas wells.. (MMcf) 1,326,045.6 Looks sort of like Alaska kicking some aska’s….. Ahhhh, butttttt,,,,,, 2006 Alaska Annual gas production from oil wells Annual Gas Prod. (MMcf) 270,308.2 and 2006 Alaska Annual oil production from gas wells… Annual Oil Prod. (Mbbl) 98,441.5 And 2006 Louisiana Annual gas production from oil wells Annual Gas Prod. (MMcf) 56,139.5 and 2006 Louisiana Annual oil production from gas wells… Annual Oil Prod. (Mbbl) 18,597.8… So, again, Alaska seems to be kicking some Louisiana ass…… Let’s see, Exxon Valdez, pretty much the only catastrophe I can recently recall up there in Alaska…. Final cost? I guess around 6 billion or so…. Louisiana, well, Katrina, rita, Andrew, Gustav, Ike, Betsy, offshore coastal erosion, New Orleans, uhhhhh Holy schmollies!!!! 100 billion!?!?!?! 200 billion !?!?!?!?!? who knows… So it seems Alaska was cheaper to buy, produces more, and costs less to operate, even in the event of a catastrophe… And Jim, you want to begrudge them a couple of roads??????? so my post disappeared did it...????

But I do thank you T-dub, it is sort of fun cross referencing stuff, I should take it more seriously...... But, after all, this whole Bayou buzz thing is just fun 'n games now anyways isn't it? I mean after all, if anyone were really concerned and really were interested in fixing anything they probably would be contacting their representatives about STRONGCONCRETE now wouldn't they????

Let’s see, Alaska has a population shy of 700 thousand folks, Louisiana has a population of 4 million plus…. I wonder how many of the population of Louisiana is on federal and or state assistance, and what the population of government workers/state workers in Louisiana is? I would imagine that if they are lump summed together it probably might come to around 675 thousand perhaps????? So what about the $2,000 per year there Jim? Your point?

I seem to recall that Texas did secede from the Union. How'd that turn out for them? I forget. And the notion that the Texas flag is allowed to be flown at the same height as the US flag is an urban legend. TW

And New Orleans as a port? Let's see....... The canals and locks and stuff down there in Panama are around 100 miles or so in length..... Let's see,,, A canal from Greenville Mississippi to the Tombigbee River in Alabama? Around the same length, give or take a couple of miles.... Shouldn't take much more than a couple of years to do it in... Yeah, Mobile makes a fine port, lot less prone to flooding too.... And with all the savings the Feds would make not having to send all those social services to Louisiana, it is probably do able... sort of like a WPA project.... It could be rapped up in a TVA fund....... Yeah, real good suggestion or wonderment there Jim...........

Oh, but here's the good one..... Guv Bobby Jindal dispatches a C-130 aircraft to Houston or Dallas to pick up Blue Tarps!!!!!!! Couldn't requisition a couple of 18 wheelers from the motor pool to make that 5 or 6 hour ride...... What a genius!!!!! I WONDER WHAT THE COST ON THOSE BLUE TARPS ARE GOING TO BE TALLIED AS WHEN THE BILL IS GIVEN TO THE FEDS??? .90 cents on the dollar return for highways? With that kind of thinking we are lucky we don't get knocked down to .35 cents on the dollar!!! And I am not even going to mention the benefits of STRONGCONCRETE...... Oooooppps, that sort of slipped..... Oh well, tax the citizens for higher cost stuff to suit yourself.... Byeeeeee..........

They fought for their independence, and in their constitution they are the ONLY state that can succeed from the Union... That is why their flag is the only state flag that can fly at the same height as the flag of the United States of America... And now Mr. Brown, care to talk about theories and practical applications of maritime law or international law??? This offshore oil and gas royalty thing is just a little bit dubious there........
