Last night, John McCain had a great opportunity to score with undecided voters and change the dynamic of this presidential race.
Instead, he missed his latest chance and once again allowed Barack Obama to escape a debate unscathed. While McCain did not make any major mistakes and seemed somewhat comfortable in the format, Obama was even more comfortable and even smoother in his presentation.
Since the debate did not change the race in any way, Obama won. Last night, McCain refused to remind voters of the link between Obama and his dangerous friends such as Weather Underground terrorist William Ayers and the radical Reverend Jeremiah Wright.McCain could have used the opportunity of unfiltered media exposure that the debate provided to attack Obama's judgment.
Instead, it was more of the same type of debate performance that we have seen before. McCain continues to say "My friends" after almost every question. He talks about "crossing the aisle" and being "bipartisan." Unfortunately, McCain is still obsessed with running an "honorable" campaign.
Such talk is really getting irritating and it would be much more helpful if McCain really took some shots at Obama. At the last debate, McCain has one more chance to take off the gloves and really do some political damage to Obama, but it might be too late.
What McCain should have done is follow the lead of his running mate Sarah Palin. In a rally this week, Palin correctly noted that Obama "launched his campaign in the living room of a domestic terrorist." Of course she is referring to William Ayers, which she said it was "fair and relevant" to discuss on the campaign trail. Palin is right, these connections are relevant and need to be examined by voters.
If Obama is elected, he will be the most liberal President in our history. Never before have we elected a President who is "certainly friendly" with a domestic terrorist. The economy is bad, the Bush presidency has been a failure, but do Americans really want to turn over the White House to Barack Obama? Sadly, if the election were held today, Obama would win.
Up until now, McCain has been unwilling to say what really needs to be said. It is not enough for Sarah Palin to do the dirty work. McCain must join the fray and get away from this obsession about being "honorable" and "bipartisan."
It is time that McCain started thinking about winning. If he wins, then McCain can focus on being an honorable President, the most honorable in our nation's history.
If he doesn't win, no one will care if he "crosses the aisle," for he will be an irrelevant Senator from the minority party in a city controlled by Democrats, in a city led by one of the most liberal Democrats of all-time, Barack Obama.

I live in Champaign , Illinois . I'm 46 years old, a
born-again Christian, a husband, a father, a small business owner, a
veteran, and a homeowner. I don't consider myself to be either
conservative or liberal, and I vote for the person, not Republican or
Democrat.
I don't believe there are 'two Americas ' - but that every
person in this country can be whomever and whatever they want to be if
they'll just work to get there - and nowhere else on earth can they find
such opportunities. I believe our government should help those who are
legitimately downtrodden, and should always put the interests of America
first.
The purpose of this letter is that I'm concerned about the future of
this great nation. I'm worried that the silent majority of honest,
hard-working, tax-paying people in this country have been passive for
too long.
Most folks I know choose not to involve themselves in politics.
They go about their daily lives, paying their bills, raising their kids,
and doing what they can to maintain the good life. They vote and consider
doing so to be a sacred trust. They shake their heads at the political
pundits and so-called 'news', thinking that what they hear is always spun
by whomever is reporting it. They can't understand how elected officials
can regularly violate the public trust with pork barrel spending. They
don't want government handouts. They want the government to protect them,
not raise their taxes for more government programs.
We are in the unique position in this country of electing our leaders.
It's a privilege to do so. I've never found a candidate in any election
with whom I agreed on everything. I'll wager that most of us don't even
agree with our families or spouses 100% of the time. So when I step into
that voting booth, I always try to look at the big picture and cast my
vote for the man or woman who is best qualified for the job.
I've hired a lot of people in my lifetime, and essentially that's what an
election
is - a hiring process. Who has the credentials? Whom do I want working
for me? Whom can I trust to do the job right?
I'm concerned that a growing number of voters in this country simply
don't get it. They are caught up in a fervor they can't explain, and its
called 'change'.
Change what, I ask. Well, we're going to change America , they say.
In what way, I query.
We want someone new and fresh in the White House, they exclaim.
So, someone who's not a politician, I press.
Uh, well, no, we just want a lot of stuff changed, so we're voting for
Obama, they state.
So the current system, the system of freedom and democracy that has
enabled a man to grow up in this great country, get a fine education,
raise incredible amounts of money and dominate the news and win his
party's nomination for the White House - that system's all wrong ?
No, no, that part of the system's okay - we just need a lot of change.
And so it goes. 'Change we can believe in.'
Quite frankly, I don't believe that vague proclamations of change hold any
promise for me.
In recent months, I've been asking virtually everyone I encounter how
they're voting.... I live in Illinois , so most folks tell me they're voting
for Barack Obama. But no one can really tell me why...only that he's going
to change a lot of stuff.
Change, change, change.. I have yet to
find one single person who can tell me distinctly and convincingly why
this man is qualified to be President and Commander-in-Chief of the most
powerful nation on earth other than the fact that he claims he's going to
implement a lot of change.
We've all seen the emails about Obama's genealogy, his upbringing, his
Muslim background, and his church affiliations. Let's ignore this for a
moment. Put it all aside. Then ask yourself, what qualifies this man to
be my president? That he's a brilliant orator and talks about change?
..CHANGE WHAT?
Friends, I'll be forthright with you - I believe the American voters who
are supporting Barack Obama don't have a clue what they're doing, as
evidenced by the fact that not one of them .NOT ONE of them I've spoken
to can spell out his qualifications.
Not even the most liberal media can explain why he should be elected.
Political experience ? ...Negligible.
Foreign relations ? ...Non-existent.
Achievements ? .Name one.
Someone who wants to unite the country ?..... If you haven't read his wife's
thesis from Princeton , look it up on the web. This is who's lining up to be
our next First Lady?
The only thing I can glean from Obama's constant harping
about 'change' is that we're in for a lot of new taxes.
For me, the choice is clear. I've looked carefully at the two leading
applicants for the job, their credentials, and which one I would want
working for me.and I've made my choice.
Here's a question: 'where were you five and a half years ago?... Around
Christmas, 2002.' You've had five or six birthdays in that time. My son
has grown from a sixth grade child to a high school graduate. Five and a
half years is a good chunk of time. About 2,000 days.. 2,000 nights of
sleep... 6, 000 meals, give or take.
John McCain spent that amount of time, from 1967 to 1973, in a North
Vietnamese prisoner-of-war camp.
When offered early release, he refused it. He considered this offer to be
a public relations stunt by his captors, and insisted that those held
longer than he should be released first. Did you get that part? He was
offered his freedom, and he turned it down. A regimen of beatings and
torture began.
Do you possess such strength of character? Locked in a filthy cell in a
foreign country, would you turn down your own freedom in favor of your
fellow man? I submit that's a quality of character that is rarely found,..
and for me, this singular act defines John McCain
.
Unlike several presidential candidates in recent years whose military
service is questionable or non-existent, you will not find anyone to
denigrate the integrity and moral courage of this man. A graduate of
Annapolis , during his Naval service he received the Silver Star, Bronze
Star, Purple Heart and Distinguished Flying Cross. His own son is now
serving in the Marine Corps in Iraq . Barack Obama is fond of saying 'We
honor John McCain's service...BUT...', which to me is condescending and
offensive...because what I hear is, 'Let's forget this man's sacrifice
for his country and his proven leadership abilities, and talk some more
about change.'
I don't agree with John McCain on everything - but I am utterly convinced
that he is qualified to be our next President, and I trust him to do
what's right. I know in my heart that he has the best interests of our
country in mind. He doesn't simply want to be President - he wants to
lead America , and there's a huge difference.
Factually, there is simply no comparison between the two candidates. A
man of questionable background and motives who prattles on about 'change'
can't hold a candle to a man who has devoted his life in public service
to this nation, retiring from the Navy in 1981 and elected to the Senate in
1982.
Perhaps Obama's supporters are taking a stance between old and new.
Maybe they don't care about McCain's service or his strength of character,
or his unblemished qualifications to be President.
Maybe 'likeability' is a higher priority for them than trust'. Being a
prisoner of war is not what
qualifies John McCain to be President of the United States of America ..
but his demonstrated leadership certainly DOES.
Dear friends, it is time for us to stand. It is time for thinking
Americans to say, 'Enough.' It is time for people of all parties to stop
following the party line. It is time for anyone who wants to keep
America first, who wants the right man leading their nation, to start a
dialogue with all their friends and neighbors and ask who they're
voting for, and why.
There's a lot of evil in this world. That should be readily apparent to
all of us by now. And when faced with that evil as we are now, I want a
man who knows the cost of war on his troops and on his citizens. I want a
man who puts my family's interests before any foreign country.
I want a President who's qualified to lead.
I want my country back, and I'm voting for John McCain.
At this point, I want to add that I don't want a First Lady that has to be
shown how to really love America . I want a First Lady who thinks more
about people beyond herself and takes on tasks like Cindy McCain does. Have you
read about her trip to Rwanda and Zaire ? Look it up. She thinks far
beyond herself and 'her' people.

You know, Jeff, the best columnists are objective observers, unless they really have the goods on sonmeone and a writing ability to explain how their point is relevant. I don't see that in your whiny "oh why can't Mccain nail Obama?'' style of writing. I don't care that it bothers you that Obama is ahead. You can't objectively look for the reasons why he is winning or question whether Republicans have any meaningful platform to stand on or any progressive ideas - in fact anything beyond why can't America be like it used to be before gays, blacks and women were allowed to talk in public. That's not a reason to vote for mccain, especially in light of his longtime support for non-regulation of wall street or of his fiends in the savings and loan business years ago that led to a bailout in he early 1990s. "Handling issues with greater skill" Let me run this hypothetical situation bayou. Say your medieval family needs to travel a long distance and you have two choices, travel by land or by sea. The ship's captain speaks only of the dangers of traveling by land whereas the caravan leader speaks only of the dangers of traveling by sea. Does that make you trust either one of these people? Wouldn't it be better for the ship's captain to describe ALL the potential dangers of you choosing to entrust him with the safety of your family? Wouldn’t you need to be assured that he recognizes the dangers and will do everything in his power to prevent them? Wouldn't you expect the same from the leader of the caravan? Of course. Of what significance is this hypothetical to us? Simple. I do not want to hear Democrats speaking about the dangers of Republican policies or Republicans speaking about the dangers of Democratic policies - not EXCLUSIVELY in any case. As an example I would like to hear a member's of BOTH parties speak out about how THEIR PARTY'S policies contributed to the current economic fiasco and have them assure us they will not make this mistake again. That will make me move my money back into stocks and other funds more so than them pointing fingers at each other. Going back even further... when the government removed our currency from being tied to precious metals should they not have 1) identified to the American public the dangers that COULD happen by doing this? and 2) assure the public they would do everything possible to ensure our money would remain sound? As long as both parties refuse to recognize/admit/prevent the negative consequences of their policies we the American public will suffer these negative consequences each time these parties gain power (don't be so naive to believe that only one party's policies have negative consequences). We as a species and nation can do better (theoretically at least). Written by kpf

The U.S. not continuing to try to be "the world's policeman" is a great point. No matter who wins this is a major issue which will have to be addressed in the coming years. The military is simply too extended and the problems that there are cannot be solved by military means alone or by U.S. unilateral action alone. This does not that isolationism is necessarily the best course of action. What it does mean is that issues will need to be handled with much greater skill than the Bush regime has been bringing to bear. Written by Moderate Independent Voice

Now it sounds like the sour-grapes line among the right-wingers is that the election is a choice between two bad candidates. Well...are they the two best possible candidates? I don't know. It seems that a cogent observation was made about voters voting for Bush in spite of that they knew that he was not the most intelligent or brightest person to be running the country. Was it not at least fairly discernible that Al Gore was more the intelligent person in 2000 and the same for John Kerry in 2004? That's what the shame is, and if the country continues to decline to try to get the most intelligent person into the office of the presidency then the country certainly will have deserved whatever low quality of leadership that it will have gotten. That's not to dismiss McCain BTW but let's state it this way: Bush has often conceded that he was a "C" student. Would an administration led by the best and brightest in the Oval Office and truly surrounded by a team of the best and brightest have lost sight of warnings that something was afoot leading up to 9/11/2001? Would such an administration have been caught so flat-footed as this one has by the recent upheavels in the markets and in the financial services sector? This is why the selection of Palin as a running mate for McCain is so dismaying. For the sake of appeasing the right wing base he picked someone utterly unprepared to step in and be able to be president at a moment's notice. Written by Moderate Independent Voice

McCain probably doesn't really want to get too frisky about the Ayers and Wright subjects on Obama because he's aware of the what the Obama camp has on him and his palling around running mate and her husband that specifically relates to the AIP (Alaskan Independence Party)founded in 1984 by a violent anti-american named Joe Volger (hmm maybe that's the reason for asking Biden if she could call him Joe) which promoted the idea of driving Alaska's secession from the United States. Volger was murdered in 1993 during the sale of illegal plastic explosives but the cabal still exists and is run by Lynette Clark who believes that Alaska should be an independent nation. Palin's husband was a member of this party for seven years and Palin herself is/was obviously a supporter since she gave a keynote address at their convention in 2006 and taped a video for the 2008 convention. Think of it another way: I - just like Michelle Obama - am "not proud of my government" - yet. Surely, if my anti-government sentiments parallel that of Mrs. Obama, they must be acceptable. It is not "government" that is the problem - as government is necessary to prevent anarchy - but the things that government does to the detriment of the governed that I have a problem with. Specifically - in this modern electronics age - I have a problem with the people not having a greater say in the things that government does. "Financial crises" - REALLY - if so then why no talk of cutting or eliminating foreign aid. Why no talk of bringing ALL the troops home, why no talk of not being the world's policeman. IF McCain loses, history will say that the key turn for him was when he selected Palin as a running mate, someone he had barely even met at all and no one had heard of. Now I find Dick Cheney quite disagreeable; he seems to have complete contempt for the people and the notion of constitutional limits on power. However, Bush still did not screw things up as badly as McCain did on that key maneuver. Even Bush who history will likely adjudge as one of the least intelligent people ever to assume the nation's highest office still found someone who could step in (and HAS de facto stepped in, Bush or no Bush) and run the show. When you select your running mate, no matter what else you do you had just better find someone who has without question what it takes in order to be able to step in and run the show and McCain failed miserably on that. Palin makes Dan Quayle look like a Rhodes Scholar. It's amazing that she could manage to become a governor, although it's no stretch to concede her political cleverness. In 2000 McCain truly was placing the "country first" and running the honorable campaign -- and not winning (apparently having decided since that if he could not beat his opposition he would adopt their tactics). That McCain would NEVER have selected a Sarah Palin (and Ron Paul would not, either) but that McCain is long gone, having been replaced by the McCain who has no principles except that winning means sacrificing everything else. To talk about anything other than the specific issues that will affect people's lives, i.e. taxes, economy, Iraq, Middle East Relations, Russia, China, North Korea, Social security, housing, education, energy, is a complete waste of time. It is a long held tactic by a certain political party to divert people's attention with unimportant things like what someone's pastor may have said, or what someone may have done 20 years ago, or to play on someone's prejudice or fears with commercials of Willie Horton, when they aren't able to get people to buy in to their policies. I must say there are things I did 10 years ago, I wouldn't necessarily do today, just as there are some people I associated with 20 years ago whom I would not associate with today. How about this? How about he convinces us that he actually has a plan that will get this country right again. Oh, yeah. I forgot. He has no such plan. He's pushing the same old snake oil that Bush sold the country for eight years. Well guess what, the patient's still sick, and we're not gonna take it anymore. It's time for some new medicine, and it comes in a bottle labeled Barack Obama. Written by David (neither Vitter nor Duke)

Written by, dear, we agree with you. It is just the little people who can beat Barack or any other politician we choose. Barack is nothing more than rhetoric and nothing to prove his mettle. Now it is time for us to attack in any way we can. Get to the point, dears. Join the movement of the ordinary American and not the naive American who will vote simply on a slogan or on race. Let's go!!!!! We did it and forced Jindal to veto the raise here in Louisiana not let's veto Barack and stand strong for McCain. GAIN WITH McCAIN, Written by RhettsWife

That's funny--McCain "refused to remind" the audience of connections between Obama and these other people. That's because the connections are ridiculous and McCain would've been laughed off the stage. The folks in the audience, like the rest of us, have been watching the stock market sink and sink and sink. They've been watching unemployment numbers go up and up and up. They have no tolerance for the usual political smears and innuendo. They want solid leadership by intelligent, careful, caring leaders. That's what Obama has to offer. But for Pete’s sake, McCain needs to get some others out there to walk point for him..... Sarah is o.k., he has used up that resource, it has 0 additonal image value...... He needs to have outside interests strip Obama down, point by point, and have common folks explain what a blood sucker Obama truly is........ Flanking maneuvers, out flank him, out flank him, then divide and conquer...... Quit being the lead man on the pedestal…. McCain's position is clear, his tactics a little iffy or gray, but come up with something now and let it be presented by common Americans……. Perhaps something along the lines of "Mr. McCain, I want to help, here is an idea"................. Forget Obama's (ha-ha) brainstorms and plans, let Americans come up with the plans.... "It is yes we can, because it is up to you" And none of that touchy feely little girls and teddy bears approach…. Written by

Loss is only in the eyes of the beholder............ If it only wants to rejoice in the hope of a percieved loss, I hope it dances the night away................ In fact, I hope it will dance, dance, dance......... Now stay the course McCain........ The ball is in your corner..... Written by
