Tulane golfers post school-record 9th-place finish at 2013 NCAA Championships

Athens, Ga. – Tulane golfers capped off one of the finest seasons in the history of the golf program Friday with a ninth-place finish, the best in school history, and senior Maribel Lopez Porras turned in a 14th-place finish for the program’s best individual effort during the final round of the 2013 NCAA Women’s Golf Championships at the University of Georgia Golf Course.

Tulane tied with Oklahoma and Michigan State and completed the 72-hole event with a 39-over 1191, its lowest total at the NCAA Championships. The Green Wave’s ninth place finish topped the previous mark of 15th set in its inaugural trip in 2005.

The 24-team field was forced to endure 15-20 mile-per-hour winds with gusts into the low 20s and that equaled high scores on the final day. The Wave grinded a 22-over 310 out of the course today, but it was good enough to keep

In a game it trailed 5-2 in the fifth, Ponstein’s Holy Cross team mounted a late rally against the Ray Brandt-sponsored John Ehret squad, kicking off the 2013 American Legion season with a 7-5 win at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium.

Tre Turner hit an RBI triple in the fifth and came around to score three batters later on Clayton Christian’s two-run single to tie the game at five.

“I’m just trying to get my stride foot down and get a pitch I like,” Turner said of his approach. “I got a fastball, sweet spot.”

In the decisive sixth, Ryan

The National Wrestling Coaches Association selected Connor Campo of St. Paul’s the Wrestler of the Year in Louisiana among its annual State Scholastic Award winners.

Campo finished the season 45-0 versus in-state and out-of-state competition and won the Division I state title in the 132-pound class. It was his second consecutive season finishing undefeated against in-state foes. He won the 126-pound state championship in 2012.

Helen Cox’s Jared Bacon admittedly battled some butterflies Friday night.

They didn’t last long.

Bacon, a running-back-turned-cornerback, picked off two passes and came up with a 27-yard completion at receiver in a spring scrimmage against McDonogh 35 at Tad Gromley Stadium.

“At first, I had a little bit of butterflies in my stomach because I haven’t played cornerback a lot,” Bacon said. “I just wanted to be in the right spots and do what my coaches wanted me to do.”

The Cougars outscored their former district foe 7-0 in a scrimmage that lasted a little over an hour.

LSU bullpen bounces back, as Fury and Cotton slam the door on Alabama

LSU bullpen bounces back, as Fury and Cotton slam the door on Alabama

HOOVER, Ala. --  Nate Fury searched for an answer, but unlike his performance on the diamond earlier Friday, he struggled to grasp one. That sure wasn't the case moments earlier when he was on the mound at the Hoover Met in a key situation.

The LSU junior reliever tossed a scoreless 8 th inning against Alabama on Friday in an elimination game, but that's become dog-bites-man type stuff. In two appearances against the Crimson Tide this season, Fury has logged 5 innings, when he has allowed 2 hits and nothing close to a run.

His effectiveness against Alabama was what had Fury baffled after he claimed the victory once the No. 2-ranked Tigers produced a pair of two-out runs in the 9 th inning to rally for a 3-2 win.

"I have no idea why I throw so well against Alabama," he said. "I've had success with them two times I've faced them."

His success on Friday included a pair of
