Southeastern Louisiana University received NCAA penalties for a lack of institutional control after self-reporting 137 athletes were academically ineligible over a five-year period, but was largely spared severe punishment Tuesday.
The school, which first reported the violations in late March, self-imposed a myriad of penalties, including scholarship reductions, a two-year probationary period and vacating victories from 2005-06 until 2009-10.
Yet the NCAA on Tuesday ordered SLU to pay an additional $25,000 fine and extended the probationary period to four years, but avoided any postseason bans.
The New Orleans Pelicans would like to win their next two games and break even on this four-game homestand.
But here come the Detroit Pistons, the type of team which can kick in the front door. The teams play Wednesday night at New Orleans Arena in the third game of the Pelicans’ homestand. They play again Friday night against the Memphis Grizzlies.
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — Arizona General Manager Kevin Towers had been talking trade with Chicago White Sox GM Rick Hahn for a month when he arrived at the winter meetings last weekend and sent a text to Angels counterpart Jerry Dipoto.
“Can I get your attention in that Trumbo deal for Skaggs and Eaton?” he remembered writing.
“Sure, why don’t you come down and talk?” Dipoto quickly replied, according to Towers.
Two days later, a three-team trade fell into place.
Southeastern Louisiana may be the new kid on the Football Championship Subdivision playoff block, but Lions coach Ron Roberts is hoping his team’s regular-season schedule works to the team’s advantage as the Lions host New Hampshire in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
Game time is 6 p.m. at Strawberry Stadium in Hammond.
Roberts pointed to a pair of three-game stretches in the team’s schedule — at TCU, South Dakota State and Samford, later followed by games at McNeese State, Central Arkansas and at home against Sam Houston State, when all three Southland teams were ranked — as a sort of primer to get the Lions ready for the postseason.
