ATLANTA — The LSU Tigers appear to be headed to Florida to ring in the New Year after Auburn’s 59-42 victory over Missouri here Saturday in the Southeastern Conference Championship Game.
Speculation is high that Missouri (11-2) will wind up in the Cotton Bowl against a former Big 12 opponent such as Oklahoma State or Oklahoma.
For 9-3 LSU, that means a likely trip to either the Outback Bowl or the Gator Bowl.
The Outback is Jan. 1 in Tampa, Fla.
HAMMOND — The postseason dream lives on for the Southeastern Louisiana football team.
Thanks to a late touchdown from sophomore receiver Jeff Smiley, the Lions eliminated Southland Conference rival Sam Houston State 30-29 on Saturday night at Strawberry Stadium in the second round of the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs.
In the quarterfinals, the No. 4 seed Lions will host New Hampshire at 6 p.m. next Saturday.
“Just a heck of a ball game,” Southeastern coach Ron Roberts said after his program played its first-ever postseason game.
When guard/forward Tyreke Evans’ left ankle was sprained in the New Orleans Pelicans’ first preseason game, it had a residual affect on the team.
Evans sprained his left ankle again in Friday night’s game against the Oklahoma City Thunder at New Orleans Arena.
A few days after Seattle trounced New Orleans 34-7 on Monday, a sportswriter began asking Saints coach Sean Payton what he hoped his offense would improve on as the team prepared to host the Carolina Panthers on Sunday night.
Payton didn’t wait for the end of the question, immediately answering: “Shoot — pretty much everything.”
First, the bad news: If that improvement is going to take place this week, it will have to come against a defense that had been No.
Remember when lots of people, including me, thought games against Dallas, San Francisco, at Atlanta and at Seattle between Nov. 10 and Dec. 2 constituted the most daunting stretch of the Saints’ season?
Well, we were wrong. Blame — and commend — the Carolina Panthers for that.
At the end of Oct. 6, the Saints were 5-0 and in sole possession of first place in the NFC South. Coach Ron Rivera’s Panthers were 1-3 and somehow tied for second in the division, so it seemed New Orleans would cruise to the NFC South title.
WACO, Texas — Bryce Petty threw touchdown passes on the first two drives of the second half for No. 9 Baylor and the Bears won their first Big 12 title and a Fiesta Bowl berth with a 30-10 win over No. 23 Texas
The final game in Baylor’s old stadium became a de facto Big 12 championship game after No. 6 Oklahoma State lost to Oklahome just before they kicked off in Waco.
Baylor (11-1, 8-1 Big 12) had never even had a winning record in the Big 12 before coach Art Briles arrived six years ago.
WACO, Texas — Turn out the lights, the fiesta is just getting started for No. 9 Baylor.
These Bears are headed to a BCS game as the Big 12 champion, making a reality out of the goal that seemed so far out of reach when Art Briles became their coach six years ago.
“That’s what hit me,” quarterback Bryce Petty said. “This is where it is, this is where that vision was.”
In what became a de facto Big 12 championship game after Oklahoma State’s loss, Petty threw for 287 yards with touchdown passes on the first drives after halftime and the Bears beat No.
After sitting empty for nearly a decade, the first major building constructed in the Central Business District after World War II and one of New Orleans’ first high-rise structures is undergoing a renovation into a boutique hotel and apartments.
Construction workers began asbestos abatement and internal demolition work late last month on 225 Baronne St., a 30-story former office tower at Baronne and Gravier streets. The 550,000-square-foot building is being turned into 192 residential apartments, a 188-room Aloft Hotel and a 356-space public parking garage.
