Minds of some Saints players split between OTAs, Oklahoma

A return to normalcy has been the theme for the New Orleans Saints this offseason. No lockout. No Bountygate. No major contract imbroglios.

It's finally just about football. For the first time in a long time, no lingering distractions or off-field worries.

But it's not that way for every Saint. A handful of players and coaches have understandably divided loyalties this week, despite the start of organized team activities and their inherent ramped-up intensity.

There's the debut of OTAs. And there's the devastation of Oklahoma.

For several Sooner State Saints, their bodies might be in Metairie but their hearts and minds are in Moore, Okla., where a devastating E5 tornado destroyed a mile-long swath of town, killed dozens of people and caused an estimated $2 billion in damages.

"It's definitely put a damper on things," said linebacker Chris Chamberlain, who has spent almost all of his 27 years in Oklahoma. "Everyone back home is dealing with this, everybody knows

Tulane's Breaux and Lynch struggle at NCAA East Regionals

Written by  |  Thursday, 23 May 2013 19:07  |  Published in Louisiana Sports News

From Tulane's sports information: Tulane’s men’s track and field athletes Thomas Lynch and Devon Breaux competed valiantly at the NCAA East Regionals in Greensboro, N.C., on Thursday, in their respective events, but neither will advance to the NCAA Nationals next week.

The first two men in Tulane track and field history to compete in an NCAA Regional posted solid numbers in their events – Breaux in the long jump and Lynch in the discus – but the competition was unlike any they have seen so far this season. With the conclusion of their events at the Irwin Belk Track at Aggie Stadium on the campus of North Carolina A&T, the Tulane men’s season has now ended.

“It’s certainly not the way we hoped the season would end, but I do believe that with this being the first time that Devon and Thomas competed at a meet of this caliber, they

Eric Held tricked friends on April Fool's Day by saying he was leaving his position as head football coach at St. Michael .

A month and a half later, the Brother Martin alumnus announced he was indeed making the move and accepting a spot on Dale Weiner's staff at Catholic-Baton Rouge .

Held will serve as running backs and special teams coach for the Bears.

"It's not something too common, especially when you're welcomed back and could probably retire there if you wanted to," Held said. "It's kind of odd to leave a good situation and step back as an assistant, but I have the opportunity

LeBron James heads All-NBA team

Miami Heat superstar LeBron James recorded 119 votes to lead first team all-NBA team, which was announced Thursday.

James was the only player to receive that many votes. Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers earned an 11th selection, tying him with Hall of Famer Karl Malone for the most selections. He had been tied at 10 with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Elgin Baylor, Bob Cousy, Michael Jordan, Bob Pettit and Jerry West.

Joining James and Bryan on the First Team are the Oklahoma Thunder's Kevin Durant, the San Antonio Spurs' Tim Duncan and the Los Angeles Clippers' Chris Paul.

James led the Heat to a franchise-record 66-16 record and was the only player in the league to lead his team in scoring (26.8 points per game), rebounding (8.0 rpg) and assists (7.3 apg).

The All-NBA Second Team is made up of guards Tony Parker of the Spurs and Russell Westbrook of

On the mend: RG3's knee, relationship with coach

Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III's right knee and his relationship with coach Mike Shanahan, each of which was damaged to an extent during the wild card playoff loss to the Seattle Seahawks, are coming along well according to player himself.

Griffin, who needed surgery on his LCL and ACL three days after playing much of the Seahawks game on one healthy leg, worked on the field in front of the media for the first time on Thursday and then met with the media en masse for the first time since the injury.

"Me and Mike hashed everything out," Griffin said. "The injury and what happened with the injury clouded the success that we had the whole season. It left a bad taste in the mouth of everybody. I don't have a problem with the way I was used (last year).

"It's proven (that) when you have consistency at the

Avs officially name Roy as coach

The Colorado Avalanche confirmed rumors on Thursday that Patrick Roy is the team's next head coach.

The 47-year-old Roy also was named vice president of hockey operations. He replaces Joe Sacco, who was fired on April 28 after Colorado finished last in the Western Conference and missed the playoffs for a third straight season.

"This is an unbelievable day for me," Roy said. "It's a new and exciting challenge that I am really looking forward to. Almost 10 years to the day that I announced my retirement as a player, I am back in Denver and hope the fans are as excited as I am."

There was speculation that Roy accepted the job earlier in the week. The team announced Thursday that it had reached an agreement in principle with the Hall of Fame goaltender.

Roy retired as an Avalanche player on May 28, 2003, with a then-NHL record for

New Orleans Saints return to business as usual under Sean Payton at OTAs

Written by  |  Thursday, 23 May 2013 17:47  |  Published in Louisiana Sports News

The New Orleans Saints wrapped up the first week of organized team activities Thursday with Coach Sean Payton calling the shots again and Drew Brees completing passes, all the while the rest of the team moved around with few - if any - distractions.

Unlike in recent offseasons when the Saints were dealing with a bounty scandal and Brees' contract situation or a labor stalemate or a Super Bowl hangover, all seemed right with the Saints.

With the media in attendance for the OTA, the Saints moved about their drills and executed their plays like it was all too familiar to them.

Players and coaches alike, said all has been well this offseason now that Payton is back following a season-long suspension and Brees is under center after missing the offseason last year.

"This is the first normal offseason we've had since the '09 offseason," Brees said. "In '10 we were coming off the Super Bowl, and that wasn't normal. In

Out-of-state schools taking notice of Christian Life guard Johnathan Stove

Frisco, Texas – Christian Life guard Johnathan Stove is proving first-hand how a good showing in the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League can raise a player's stock on the recruiting trail.

Stove, who held offers from Louisiana Tech, Southern, Southeastern Louisiana and Xavier New Orleans, has recently seen his profile expand to include some out-of-state schools.

The 6-foot-4, 196-pound Stove has led the Nike Team Louisiana in scoring (11.7 points per game) and rebounding (6.8) so far in the Nike EYBL as the team heads into Session No. 4 in Minneapolis on Friday.

Stove, who is the No. 5 prospect in the NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune Super 16 rankings , says Southern Mississippi, Alabama-Birmingham and Ohio all have started to show a little bit more interest in him since the Nike EYBL has started.

"It kind of exploded," Stove said. "I just came out there and played hard and all of a sudden, it's been blowing up. I just played
