Investigators in Slaughter, La. are wondering if playing Grand Theft Auto IV inspired an 8-year-old to shoot his elderly caretaker in the back of the head as she watched TV, WAFB.com is reporting.

90-year-old Marie Smothers, who reportedly had a loving and healthy relationship with the young boy, was pronounced dead Thursday evening.

East Feliciana Parish Sheriff's Office officials believe the act was intentional but will not be charging the boy with murder or any other crime because of his age.

"Although a motive for the shooting is unknown at this time investigators have learned that the juvenile suspect was playing a video game on the Play Station III 'Grand Theft Auto IV,' a realistic game that has been associated with encouraging violence and awards points to players for killing people, just minutes before the homicide occurred," the East Feliciana Parish Sheriff's Office said in a release.
