Judge T.S. Ellis, III once referred to himself as “Caesar in [the] Rome” that’s his courtroom though, by the jurist’s own admission, it’s a pretty small place. An exquisitely educated Reagan appointee, since 1984, Ellis transforms himself from mere mortal into mini-deity every time he dons a black toga to judge the accused arrayed beneath his bench who must contend for favor.
Donald Trump praised Ellis, recently, for the scoldings he’s been giving prosecutors from the special counsel’s office during the trial of Paul Manafort, ex-chair of the Trump campaign. Manafort is accused of evading taxes, money-laundering, and a passel-full of other financial crimes, mostly having a nexus to unreported income earned from pro-Russia work he undertook for the Ukraine’s former president, Viktor Andriyovych Yushchenko, who fled to Russia before the axe dropped.
Did Thomas Markle, Sr. “lie” to Prince Harry?
That’s the question burning up the Daily Mail and British radio waves this weekend.
Commentators claim that Prince Harry telephoned his soon-to-be father-in-law, Thomas Markle, on May 11—eight days before Harry’s wedding to Meghan, and asked him…well, we don’t know exactly what. Because Harry and Thomas had never met nor had they ever spoken before then. So, how do we know for sure who said what to whom, when Thomas Markle can’t even be sure himself who exactly was speaking to him on the telephone?
It's part of a pattern.
In the past three years, there seems to be an increase in tweets and Facebook posts that claim that the “real civil rights” political organization is the Republican Party and the real white Supremacists, are the Democratic Party.
This week, I happen to see this type of suggestion or overt proposition on social media, more than usual. It seemed to follow the spat between Donald Trump and Lebron James.
One Facebook friend posted a video that presented this narrative—that despite its claim for caring for the fate of the minorities, the Democratic Party have supported the worst in our society as it relates to race.
The Queen City of the South is under siege. No, not from hurricanes. This time, the siege is from within. New Orleans is known as the city that care forgot. But it’s been hard to let the good times roll in the Big Easy when the dice keep coming up snake eyes.
New Orleans is in a battle to stay afloat as it deals with major street crime, inept public officials, and a dysfunctional criminal justice system where even federal officials can no longer be trusted. Author James Lee Burke writes about this corruption and dysfunction in his novel Last Car to Elysian Fields. “One of the most beautiful cities in the Western hemisphere was killed three times, and not just by forces of nature.”
Last night, two players on the Miami Dolphins team knelt while another one raised his fist in protest. Another two members of the Philadelphia Eagles raised their fists. In Jacksonville, four members of the Jaguars stayed in the locker room while the National Anthem was played.
