Louisiana Governor: Information and news stories about Democrat Governor, John Bel Edwards

cassidyLouisiana Governor John Bel Edwards, who is in somewhat of an uncomfortable position, being the governor of the State in which one of the key promoters of congressional legislation on healthcare repeal, US Senator Bill Cassidy, is the key author, has come out against the passing of the current Obamacare repeal legislation.

Here is Governor Edwards's statement:

john bel edwards loresHow do you fill a budget gap of more than #1 billion dollars after consecutive years of combination of tax increases and budget cuts amounting to roughly $3 billion?

This is the issue plaguing Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards, his staff, the Louisiana legislature and of course, the business and the citizens of the state.

houston galv 3Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards has issued a statement regarding what is now called Tropical Storm Harvey which is dumping substantial amounts of rain onto Texas, causing catastrophic flooding in Southeast Texas, including Houston.

rain poursYou know the old expression, "when it rains, it pours".

surely, some in New Orleans must feel like that today including Mayor Mitch Landrieu and Governor John Bel Edwards as they face another day and another issue with the city's flooding.

This weekend, parts of the city flooded unexpectedly, in part due to insufficient pumping operations. Today, parts of the city are at high risk due to the rain and disrupted turbine.

Today, Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards and Mayor Mitch Landrieu have provided this information update:

jbe budgetFrom the governor who said he is “committed to open and honest budgeting that does not rely on the gimmicks of the past,” yet another past budget gimmick he endorsed surfaces.

It turns out that about $28 million used in the fiscal year 2018 budget does not exist yet, and may not before the close of the year. That money depends upon resolution of lawsuits favorably to Louisiana, which an additional about $8 million did come available recently.

Louisiana’s chief executive has some big problems ahead.  Over one billion dollars in current taxes are set to expire at the end of the year.  That loss comes out of the current budget with no plans to take care of the long list of needs for road construction and maintenance, as well as a backlog of other projects that are on the lack burner for lack of funds. What’s an agonizing governor to do?

baldoneIf he has any hope to drive Louisiana’s policy agenda, Gov. John Bel Edwards eventually has to figure out that he’s not in the Army any more.

The Democrat seemed to receive a surprise at the close of last week when his handpicked choice for the District 2 Public Service Commission full term, Damon Baldone, registered for that race as a Republican. Recently, when former commissioner Scott Angelle took a job working for the Pres. Donald Trump Administration, Edwards with praise appointed Baldone to serve in the interim.
