New Orleans Elections wrap: UNO’s stats tell story of Cantrell win over Charbonnet

Now come the post mortems and the efforts by those elected to office to put together city government for the next three and half years.

The pollster that was right on the mark this election cycle was Ed Chervenak, Professor of University of New Orleans.

Today, he has presented a statistical wrap via powerpoint. Below is the narrative.  Click on the link to see the entire presentation.

Overall early vote turnout was 7.4 percent, which was higher than for the primary.

 

African-Americans were more likely than whites to early vote and women were more likely than men to cast an early ballot.

Females are 56 percent of registered voters,  but were 62 of early voting electorate in the 2017 runoff.  


 

 

Blacks comprise 57 percent of registered voters but were 68 percent of early voters.

Election day turnout was 25.6 percent for the mayoral election.

 

Overall turnout was 33 percent.

The plot chart on the left is for turnout on election day only. It indicates 31 percent of non-black voters showed up at the polls compared to 23 percent of African-Americans, an 8 point gap.

 

The plot chart on the right is the combined turnout for early voting and election day voting. It indicates 33 percent of non-black voters showed up at the polls compared to 25 percent of African-Americans, an 8 point gap.

Cantrell ran well across the city. She received a majority of the non-black vote and 69 percent of the African-American vote.

Nguyen received a majority of the vote in 49 out of 57 precincts in District E.

 

In the 19 precincts that are 95 percent or more African-American, Nguyen won a majority of the vote in 14 of them.
