According to the Charlie Melancon campaign press release late Friday, David Vitter has agreed to a second live televised debate on Wednesday October 27th hosted by WDSU-TV in New Orleans.

In the press release, the Melancon campaign stated that “In August, Melancon challenged Vitter to a series of five live, televised town hall-style debates across the state.  In his 2004 campaign for Senate, Vitter committed to five live, televised debates.  Since Melancon issued the challenge, Vitter and Melancon have been invited to a total of seven live, televised debates.  Vitter has only accepted invitations to debates hosted by WWL-TV and WDSU-TV, both in New Orleans.”

The debate acceptance comes one day after the Melancon campaign released a poll by their pollster  Anzalone Liszt Research claiming that Senator Vitter was ahead by only seven points.  A poll earlier during the week said that Vitter led Melancon by 16 points.

Since the release of the Anzalone poll, through a series of emails, the National Republican Senatorial Committee has openly criticized that poll and the polling organization calling the Melancon poll as “far-fetched internal poll numbers”.   On Thursday, the Republican organization released an internal memorandum claiming that Sen. Vitter is well ahead.

Also on Friday, Vitter has released his latest commercial.  Unlike previous commercials, Vitter did not attack Melancon or even mention him.  Instead, the commercial focuses upon Washington and attempts to show that people agree with his message.
