The Trump Impeachment trial, part II is history. An insufficient number of Republican US Senators decided to break rank and vote for impeachment. Below is the relevant portion of Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s post vote speech in which he discusses Trump culpability. He completed the speech explaining his reasons for his not guilty vote, lack of jurisdiction. The entire post-verdict vote by Democrat Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer follows:
Thank God, the Congressional GOP found an honest man.
Today, Mitch Romney defied his party, his president, his future re-election and followed his conscience. He stated that he is a religious man and as such, took his oath as a promise to God to be fair and just. In doing so, he felt the evidence was simply overwhelming to support the impeachment of Donald J. Trump. He said Trump committed an impeachable offense and should be removed.
In 2016, the American people elected Donald Trump as the President of the United States. His top campaign pledge was to build a border wall. It was the most popular slogan at his rallies and at the GOP 2016 Convention in Cleveland.
After two years of waiting, it is time for the President to deliver on his pledge. Of course, nothing happened with the Republicans in charge of Congress and nothing is happening now that the Democrats control the House of Representatives. Despite years of strong statements advocating a wall and border security, top Democrats are adamantly opposed to giving President Trump any funds for a border wall. It has been called “racist,” “immoral,” and “ineffective,” among other highly critical comments.
Last night, the world watched President Donald Trump give his first State of the Union speech. Politically, it resonated throughout America. What about in Louisiana? More broadly, what can politicians and legislators learn from the Trump phenomena as they approach the upcoming elections and the legislative session?
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has been a disaster for the Republican Party and has been a totally ineffective partner for President Trump in passing critical legislation. After failing on the vitally important bill to repeal Obamacare, McConnell and his Republican colleagues face a major test in the tax reform bill.
The stakes could not be higher for the GOP and President Trump. If they cannot show results to the American people, there will be a political bloodbath in the 2018 mid-term elections.
“Progress Again!” Donald Trump can have the success he craves, and breach the mega-chasm of civil division afflicting the country if he becomes a Democrat. It would mean campaigning for Democratic Senate and House candidates next Fall, but he could do it. Chuck and Nancy would help, and the public would reward the new show with high ratings.
