peterson kcpIt's Official!! The controversy behind the Louisiana Democrats not backing the party candidate for Louisiana Treasurer is now of the past.

Earlier this week, the party's executive committee, via its party chairperson, Karen Carter Peterson, announced it was recommending the endorsement of Derrick Edwards.  Two days after the general election, the Louisiana Republican Party endorsed its candidate John Schroder.

Here is the press release from the Louisiana Democratic Party:

Today, the Democratic State Central Committee voted to endorse Derrick Edwards. This scheduled procedural vote followed a strong recommendation from the Executive Committee over a week prior.

"Derrick Edwards is the best candidate in this race. He has a master’s degree in accounting from Tulane University and a law degree. Judging by his opponent’s misleading ads, I’m not even sure that he knows the job he’s running for,” said Louisiana Democratic Party Chair Senator Karen Carter Peterson. “The party has a plan in place to supplement the efforts of the Edwards campaign and with the power of the people, we will help him cross the finish line.”

Edwards addressed the group at the meeting prior to the vote. “I am proud to be a Democrat and to have the support of the party,” said Edwards. “We need to put the most qualified individuals in office. People who don’t have a political agenda- who are truly qualified to serve.”

Edwards was the sole Democrat running during the primary and captured 31 percent of the vote. Schroder, a Louisiana legislator, beat out two other major-GOP candidates to earn a runoff spot.  He received 24% of the vote.

The turnout was only 13.5% statewide.
