Louisiana Business: Go Red, Blue Cross, St. Tammany, New Orleans Jazz Fest

Go Red

– The American Heart Association hosts its annual Go Red for Women Luncheon in New Orleans on February 3 at the Sheraton New Orleans Hotel beginning at 9 a.m.  Chairperson of the event is Barbara Turner Windhorst.

The luncheon is part of the Go Red For Women movement that encourages local women to take charge of their heart health by making it a top priority so they can live stronger, longer lives.  Guests can participate in free health screenings, free educational seminars and a silent auction from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. At 11:30 a.m., the ticketed heart-healthy luncheon program begins with the stories of local women affected personally by heart disease.

Closing out the luncheon program is a fashion show featuring clothing from Chatta Box. Modeling the clothing will be local heart disease survivors and other prominent New Orleans women.

New Orleans Jazz Festival

As it has for many years, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and Foundation will distribute thousands of free Jazz Fest tickets to the needy through the Community Outreach Tickets program.

Louisiana-based nonprofit, religious, educational and governmental social service organizations may apply for tickets, which they will disburse to their clients who otherwise wouldn't be able to afford to go to Jazz Fest.

“It brings us great pleasure to distribute so many tickets to the community,” said Don Marshall, the Foundation’s executive director. “It’s important that we do all we can to help people experience and enjoy such an incredible event.”

Community Outreach tickets are distributed according to strict guidelines. They may not be sold, used for fund–raising or given to current or former employees, board members, volunteers, business clients and the like. Commercial enterprises and individuals are not eligible to apply.

The deadline to submit applications is Friday, Feb. 25, 2011.

City Year

City Year Louisiana will host its first annual fundraiser, School House Rock, to honor five years of service in the Greater Baton Rouge and Greater New Orleans areas and the five visionaries who established the organization. The event will be hosted on Thursday, January 27 at the Shaw Center for the Arts. Tickets for the event are available for purchase online at <> .

The civic leaders being honored at the event include: Mayor Mitch Landrieu, Lori J. Bertman; John Davies; Diana Lewis, co-board chair of City Year Louisiana; and Jennifer Eplett Reilly, co-founder of City Year, Inc. and co-board chair of City Year Louisiana. Keeping with the School House theme, the event will feature gourmet “cafeteria” favorites and the Michael Foster Project will provide entertainment.

Established in Boston in 1988, City Year is a non-profit Americorps organization that unites young people from all backgrounds for a demanding year of full-time service.

St. Tammany

The annual recap of projects completed by the St. Tammany Economic Development Foundation show the organization had a direct impact of more than $54 million last year in the retention and recruitment of businesses.

The 12 completed projects totaled $54,005,000 in direct investments in St. Tammany Parish, retaining 107 jobs and creating 835 new ones. As those dollars were spent and re-invested in the community, the entire economic impact is estimated at a quarter-billion dollars.

"Each dollar invested in local businesses means more jobs and more money put into the local economy," said Brenda Reine-Bertus, executive director of the STEDF. "We have seen the beginnings of an economic upturn locally in housing starts and sales, among other indicators, and the impact is clearly measurable in these data."

Among EDF's successes in 2010 were the relocation of Globalstar, Inc., to Covington from California, bringing 100 new jobs; the opening Blade Dynamics, Inc., at Michoud, which brings residents to St. Tammany and which will bring 600 new jobs; and the expansion of Northrop Grumman 3001 in Slidell, bringing 54 new jobs.

Another 39 projects are in progress on EDF's roster, with potential investments of more than $207 million and 1,700 new jobs.


The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has officially classified flu activity in Louisiana as widespread. The state’s seasonal flu activity is most prevalent in Central Louisiana where flu symptoms accounted for more than 15 percent of doctor and emergency room visits.


As flu season reaches its peak, the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals is urging residents who haven’t already done so to protect themselves and their families by getting a seasonal flu vaccination. Each year, the flu kills more than 36,000 Americans.


“It’s not too late to vaccinate,” said Dr. Frank Welch, director of the state’s immunization program. “The flu shot only takes a few days to be effective, and people are usually protected completely within 7-to-10 days of getting the flu vaccine. Vaccines are the best preventive measure we have to help fight the spread of this illness, and we encourage everyone to get their seasonal flu shot to help protect not only themselves, but their families and friends as well.”

New Orleans Master Plan

The American Planning Association (APA) has selected New Orleans’ Master Plan, Plan for the 21st Century: New Orleans 2030, to receive the 2011 National Planning Excellence award for a Hard-Won Victory this year. The award recognizes a planning effort undertaken by a community, neighborhood, citizens group, or jurisdiction in the face of difficult, challenging, or adverse conditions. Plan for the 21st Century: New Orleans 2030 was chosen for its ability to engage, educate and unite a broad and diverse community.


“The task of developing a Master Plan while the city was recovering from a major catastrophe was a challenging assignment for tour team,” said Yolanda Rodriguez, Executive Director of the City Planning Commission. “Plan for the 21st Century: New Orleans 2030 represents a collective vision that was developed through a series of tough, but honest, community meetings. This vision will serve as the cornerstone for securing a vital, healthy future for New Orleanians.”

New Orleans Water Business

In partnership with the Greater New Orleans Foundation (GNOF), The Idea Village is excited to announce the 2011 Water Venture Development Challenge (Water Challenge™). Blue Cross Opens 2011 Angel Award Nominations


Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana has issued its yearly call for nominations for the Angel Award® with a deadline of May 13. The Angel Award, presented by the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana Foundation, annually recognizes eight Louisianians who do extraordinary volunteer work to improve the lives of our state’s at-risk children. 


Because making a difference in Louisiana’s communities requires time and money, the Angel Award includes a $20,000 grant from the Foundation for each honoree’s charity.
