Ed StatonDREW Brees is in Honolulu preparing for Sunday's Pro Bowl, and said he still has a chip on his shoulder despite being the MVP in the last Super Bowl

"I have to keep a chip on my shoulder like I have something to prove” said the quarterback.  "I have a lot to prove. I look at every day as, 'I have to get better today. If I'm not getting better, I'm getting worse. You don't stay the same.'

"So I improve every day, continue to make sacrifices that I've made to reach this level. And it's about how can I win another championship."

After the Pro Bowl, Brees will take some time off from football and resume training in late March. Training. Conditioning.

USA Today has named Brees as the Saints MVP for 2010, Writes the newspaper, "Brees earned a ticket for the fourth time in his five-year tenure with the Saints. He topped 400 completions for the third time (no one else has done it twice) and again led the league in completing 68.1 per cent of his passes.

"His 22,918 passing yards with the Saints are the most ever over a five-year stretch."

USA Today named Peyton Manning the Colts' MVP for 2010.
Writes the newspaper: "It wasn't his best season -- though raising the bar a bit for a four-time NFL MVP is tough -- and Manning had a career worst 11 interceptions over a three-game losing streak late in the season.

"But he passed for 4,700 yards and had 33 touchdowns while leading Indy to its seventh AFC South title in eight years, and a record ninth playoff.. He started his 208th consecutive game -- most ever to start a career -- while completing 450 passes -- most ever in a  season -- despite toiling for an offense without tight end Dallas Clark, running back Joseph Addai and wide receivers Anthony Gonzalez and Austin Collie."

USA Today also picked its annual "All-Joes" a team dedicated to the unheralded prime performers for 2010.

One of the NFC South receivers is the Saints' Marques Colston. He was named to the team because his quiet demeanor doesn't draw the attention that so many other receivers scream for.

On defense, Saints safety Malcolm Jenkins was named to the team, but he isn't going to be a regular on this team because he is on the verge of being a big-time player.

Brees is the eighth highest-paid quarterback in the NFL and Manning is No. 1. Both will sign new contracts before next season -- if there is one.

Brees' salary is $12.99 million and he makes about $5 million in endorsements for an $18 million total. His initial contract was for $60 million.

Manning's salary is $14 million and he makes another $14 million in endorsements for a $28 million total.

Eli Manning ranks behind older brother Peyton in earnings. The Giants quarterback earns $20.5 million in salary and $7 million in endorsements for a $27 million total.

Glenn Dorsey of LSU, ranks 25th on the money scale with a $13.97 million salary. The Chiefs defensive tackle doesn't earn anything from endorsements.

SOME hither, others yon: has the Saints drafting Wisconsin defensive end J.J. Watts with their 24th pick, "He's a big-time athlete with fantastic size (6-6, 292 pounds). He flew up draft boards this season at Wisconsin with a relentless motor. His drive to get into the backfield is fun to watch. Watts could grade out higher by the end of the draft process, but it's another one of those intriguing defensive end prospects looking for a home in the first round. The Saints need another pass rusher opposite Will Smith if they want to put pressure on opposing offensives next season. His style of play will help everyone on the defensive line."....

THE COWBOYS Stadium roof will be closed for the Super Bowl. The early forcast for Super Bowl Sunday in Arlington, Tex., is for the temperature to be around 49 degrees at kickoff, which is about 10 degrees cooler than normal. It won't really matter because the roof is going to be closed for the big game. The NFL knows no one really wants to pay big money to sit at a cold Super Bowl...

The body of Brian Reed, brother of Ravens safety Ed Reed, has been recovered from the Mississippi River. The 26-year-old Brian Reed jumped into the river on Jan 7 while trying to elude police after he was pulled over on a suspicion of driving a stolen car. "It's been tough, but God is good. To have found our brother brings closure and knowing that he's in a better place," said Ed Reed, who makes his offseason home at St. Rose. The Reed family issued a statement thanking the divers who searched for Reed's body, as well as the St.Charles Parish Sheriff's Department and the St.Tammany Parish Sheriff's Department, who were involved in the search...

LSU cornerback Patrick Peterson is meeting with the 49ers and Broncos this week in Mobile...Some 257 invitations have been mailed to collegians who are entering the draft.  Included this year will be the underclassmen that made themselves eligible for the draft plus additional seniors....

PAUL Hornung, 75, is picking his old team to beat the Steelers by a field goal, and he believes this  could be the start of a dynasty similar to the one he helped build in the 1960s, when coach Vince Lombardi led Green Bay to five NFL titles and victories in the first two Super Bowls. Hornung was almost a Saint. The Saints selected Hornung in the expansion draft when the team was being formed, but he failed the physical (neck nerves) and never wore the black and gold uniform. Hornung said Lombardi asked him at one point in the first Super Bowl if he'd like to play in the game. Hornung declined because of his injury, saying the risk outweighed the reward ($15,000)...I made  10 resolutions, and have already broke 8, 9, 10, 12.
