Disaster Emergency Management

Louisiana and the New Orleans area is becoming a hub for emergency management.  Next year, experts throughout the globe will have an opportunity to learn from the best.  The New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center has partnered with Imago Productions, Inc.

and state and local emergency management agencies to launch a major new initiative that establishes Louisiana as the center of excellence for disaster management. The International Disaster

Conference and Expo debuts January 17 – 19, 2012 and will feature the most renowned experts in the disaster recovery industry and showcase the latest equipment and technology from around the world. It will return every January thereafter and call New Orleans its permanent home.

The formal announcement was made by Mark Cooper, Director of the Governor’s Office Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness with a backdrop of the City of New Orleans’s new

Emergency Mobile Command Center.

The scope of the event encompasses disaster preparation, response, recovery, and mitigation techniques. For the first time, disaster management and homeland security professionals from all

aspects of the industry will have the opportunity to explore each other’s capabilities and challenges with the goal of minimizing the loss of life and property resulting from the next inevitable

catastrophic event. 

Louisiana agencies participating in the announcement include the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, the New Orleans Mayor’s office of Homeland Security &

Emergency Preparedness, and the LSU Stephenson Disaster Management Institute.


The IDCE will provide a forum for emergency management and homeland security professionals to be better prepared for and respond to emergencies of all kinds,” said Mark Cooper, GOHSEP

Director. “We look forward to bringing these different groups together, both public and private and providing the opportunity for them to learn from and support each other.”

“Our goal is to create opportunities for those who work diligently to ensure our communities recover from catastrophic events a forum that can bring greater cohesiveness to such response and

recovery efforts,” said Jimmy Mouton, president/CEO of Imago Productions, Inc.

The event is expected to attract over 20,000 attendees and 500 exhibitors, and present a direct annual impact of $20 million within its first five years. The announcement was made at the New

Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in the space the conference and expo will be conducted.

 Celebrate Louisiana cuisine Monday, March 14, at the 14th annual Lafcadio Hearn Award Dinner and Distinguished Visiting Chef Series, presented by the John Folse Culinary Institute at Nicholls State University.

The event will honor Executive Chef John Besh, proprietor of six New Orleans restaurants – Restaurant August, Besh Steak, Lüke, La Provence, American Sector and Domenica– and one out-of-state restaurant, Lüke San Antonio River Walk in San Antonio, Texas. Additional entrepreneurial projects include the creation of Besh Restaurant Group Catering; a line of gourmet products; and the publication of a cookbook, “My New Orleans.”

Named one of the “Top 10 Best New Chefs in America” by Food and Wine magazine, Besh also received the James Beard Award for Best Chef of the Southeast in 2006 and Food Arts’ Silver Spoon Award in 2009 for revitalizing the culinary legacy of New Orleans. He is a frequent guest chef on the NBC Today Show and has appeared on the Food Network and the Sundance Channel.

The award dinner will begin with a cocktail reception at 6 p.m., followed by the distinguished visiting chef’s presentation and dinner at 7 p.m., in the Cotillion Ballroom of the Bollinger Memorial Student Union at Nicholls. Urban League, Morial, ACLU

Marc Morial will offer the keynote address at the ACLU Foundation of Louisiana’s 35th Annual Ben Smith Award Gala and Membership Meeting at the River Bend Ballroom, New Orleans Marriot at the Convention Center, at 6 p.m.


The National Urban League has chosen New Orleans to host its Annual Conference in July 2012.


Arts and Crafts

The famous semi-annual Shadows-on-the-Teche Arts and Crafts Festival will be hosted on the Shadows grounds on Saturday March 19 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. More than 80 vendors from around the state will exhibit and sell their original work. 


Admission to the festival is $3.00 per person and your arm band gets you in all day! Raffle tickets will be sold to win items donated by the vendors.  In addition to the arts & crafts, food and desert vendors will be on hand to satisfy your hungry side! Come enjoy the day with your family and friends while supporting local artist, craftsmen and the beautiful Shadows-on-the-Teche.


The Shadows is located at 317 east Main Street in New Iberia. Tours of this historic plantation home will be given throughout the day for an additional cost.  Unwind from the carnival season with a day in the Shadows gardens at the Arts and Crafts Festival! All funds raised will be used for the continued preservation and maintenance of Shadows-on-the-Teche..
