“Our Lieutenant Governor is using these funds to play politics instead of using this money in the most impacted areas. The Governor committed $3 to each of the hardest hit Parishes in November of last year. That has since shrunk to $2.2 million. How much more will it be cut down? It’s not right that Dardenne gives 64 Parishes money for a spill that happened along the Coast. If a train derailed in Shreveport, and the responsible company paid $50 million to restore tourism in Shreveport, Plaquemines Parish should not rightfully receive a dollar. It’s absurd that the money is being spread around the state in an election year and not bulked together and spent wisely to bring back Louisiana seafood, fishing, and tourism. I want the $3 million dollars that was promised to Plaquemines Parish from Governor Jindal and not a penny less,” said President Nungesser.
Plaquemines Parish was recognized as ground zero for the Oil Spill. The Deepwater Horizon rig exploded 49 miles off the coast of Plaquemines Parish. Oil began washing ashore in the following weeks and continues to impact areas of Plaquemines Parish.

The New Orleans Regional Leadership Institute (NORLI), a partnership with Greater New Orleans, Inc., announced today that it is accepting applications for the 2011-2012 NORLI Class. All business, civic, and public-sector leaders in the ten-parish region of Southeast Louisiana are encouraged to apply by visiting http://gnoinc.org/norli/norliapps/add. New Orleans and IBM
Mayor Mitch Landrieu on Wednesday announced that IBM has selected the City of New Orleans to receive an IBM Smarter Cities Challenge grant. The grant will provide City Hall with access to IBM's top experts to analyze and recommend ways New Orleans can become an even better place in which to live, work and play. The approximate value of each Smarter Cities Challenge grant is equivalent to as much as $400,000.
“This announcement reaffirms the private sector and philanthropy community’s confidence in our city and New Orleans’ role as a laboratory for innovation in America,” said Mayor Landrieu. “It’s no secret that the city government and technology infrastructure we inherited was not sufficient to even deliver quality services for our residents. In 2011, we are investing $2.7 million to build a culture of performance and accountability within City Hall and IBM’s support will be vital to enhance the work we’re doing to make government work better for our citizens.”
The IBM Smarter Cities Challenge is a competitive grant program in which IBM is awarding a total of $50 million worth of technology and services to 100 municipalities worldwide over the next three years. Teams of specially selected IBM experts will provide city leaders with analysis and recommendations to support successful growth, better delivery of municipal services, more citizen engagement, and improved efficiency.
NORLI Is Ready
NORLI is a nine-month program designed to enhance personal leadership skills and examine issues central to the advancement of the Greater New Orleans region. The class brings together forty business, civic, and community leaders representing all races, genders, industries, and communities in the region with a mission to promote regional collaboration by providing a forum for the exchange of diverse viewpoints and a network of relationships.
The NORLI curriculum will examine public policy, education, workforce development, diversity, criminal justice, public safety, environment, and sustainability, and will focus on how all of these issues affect economic development and quality of life. The NORLI program consists of two overnight retreats and seven full-day sessions beginning September 20, 2011 and ending June 8, 2012. Tuition is $2,500 and covers all expenses for the program, including materials, meals, and other expenses associated with the opening and closing retreats. As part of ongoing construction of the Greater New Orleans Hurricane and Storm
Damage Risk Reduction System, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will require that northbound traffic at the
Lake Pontchartrain Causeway be reduced to one lane. The lane closure will begin at 7:00 p.m. on Friday,
March 11 and remain in effect until 2:30 p.m. on Monday, March 14. During this time period, a speed
limit reduction from 35 to 20 mph will be in effect between 6th Street and the entrance to the bridge.
Jefferson Parish Business
Jefferson Business Career & Solutions Center is offering free training for individuals who were directly or indirectly affected by the Louisiana Gulf Coast Oil Spill that occurred on April 20, 2010. Services offered under the NEG grant will assist those who are unemployed due to the oil spill and are seeking training for a new career.
The Louisiana Gulf Coast Oil Spill NEG Grant Program offers a variety of employment services designed to give those affected an opportunity to obtain the necessary skill sets that will prepare them for re-entry into the workforce. Those employment services offered include: occupational skills training, on the job training, basic literacy remediation, small business capitalization, and entrepreneurship training.

Tobacco and Mardi Gras
The Office of Alcohol & Tobacco Control was very active this Mardi Gras season. From visiting businesses along the parade routes before carnival season began to walking the parade routes during it, ATC was out in full force. The attachment contains a breakdown of all the parades worked and how many alcohol related citations were issued at each.
Part of ATC’s main mission is to enforce the underage drinking laws and to ensure that businesses selling alcohol are properly permitted. This year’s crackdown is one of the biggest in over 10 years at ATC with almost all of the cost being paid for by a federal grant from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.
Statewide there were 825 alcohol related citations issued by ATC agents. The following is breakdown of those citations: 408 citations issued to individuals along 35 parade routes across the state, 393 citations in the French Quarter, 24 citations at Cajun Field in Lafayette, and 5 arrests made in the New Orleans region. Out of the 1278 businesses permitted to sell alcohol that were inspected before the season began, only 15 citations were issued. In New Orleans, 97 kegs of beer (1503 gallons) were confiscated from a frat party for selling beer illegally; numerous underage drinkers were present.
“Considering the amount of alcohol that is sold and consumed during Mardi Gras, ATC is very pleased with the results for 2011. We may not be able to totally prevent minors from purchasing alcohol, but by being pro-active and visible we can make a difference and these numbers reflect that,” stated ATC Commissioner Troy Hebert.
