With NFL draft day approaching, who will the New Orleans Saints pick as their number one?

Of course, that is the question, the local sports world has been asking ever since the Saints' quick exit from the playoffs.

Here is a list of the Saints' first NFL picks since the team's birth.  You can see the rest of the list on Louisiana Sports Talk.

1967 26 RB Leslie Kelly - Played just 3 seasons and never started Alabama

1968 7 DE Kevin Hardy - Never played for the Saints in his 4-year career
that included stints in SF, G' Bay & S.D. Notre Dame

1969 17 G John Shinners - Played for Saints (69-71) and later for Baltimore and
Cincinnati.  Last season was 1977. Xavier

1970 10 WR Ken Burrough Texas Southern

1971 2 QB Archie Manning - Perhaps the most beloved player in Saints history.
Never reached full potential due to lack of talent around him.  Traded to
Oilers in 1982.  Manning earned Pro Bowl honors with the Saints and is in
the team's Hall of Fame. Ole Miss

1972 8 G Royce Smith Georgia

1973 N/A N/A No pick - Traded to Baltimore for the overall #2 pick N/A

The Bears had been considered the favorites to open at Lambeau, but the schedule-makers opted instead for a showdown of the last two Super Bowl champions. The decision to send the Saints to Lambeau may have been a nudge to Drew Brees,  who has been heavily involved in the labor dispute, but who surely relishes the chance to start the season by doing to the Packers that which the Saints didn't have a chance to do during the 2010 season....

Some hither, others yon: Mediation between the NFL owners and players have been adjourned "tentatively: until May 16. And the extent of  progress made remains completely unclear. While CBS Sports; Mike Freeman has been extremely pessimistic, NFL Network's Albert Breer has been the voice of optimism in his reports. The concern on the players' side is that their leadership didn't take mediation's seriously. Breer is having a hard time believing free agency will occur before July or August.... is out with a draft power rating of the top 56 draft choices. LSU cornerback Patrick Peterson ranks No. 3 and Tigers running back Stevan Ridley is No. 38. The website's report on Peterson: "A consensus All-American and also Defensive Player of the Year in the SEC as well as Special Teams Player of the Year. In 39 games, recorded 135 tackles, 22 pass breakups and 7 interceptions. As a return specialist, he finished with 418 punt return yards and 2 TDs to go with 932 kickoff return yards." Here's the report on Ridley: "Rushed for 1,147 yards and 15  touchdowns for an offense that featured little passing prowess to keep defenders out of the box. Good pass blocker. Tough, powerful runner with good forward body lean and leg drive."...People who think they know everything are annoying to people who do...(Order your 2011 LSU Schedule T-shirts from Louisiana Sports
