New Orleans Mayor, Mitch Landrieu has issued a statement related to a growing controversy involving the New Orleans Police Department and even his Chief of Police Rolan Serpas.

News reports have uncovered that top police officers have been privatey paid by the city to look at police reports associated with traffic tickets rather than  the reports being read by traffic police during work hours.

Here is the statement by Landrieu:

NEW ORLEANS, LA—Today, Mayor Mitch Landrieu released the following statement regarding the Anytime Solutions, LLC, detail for the traffic camera program:

“Last month, I gave Chief Serpas a strong directive to submit a plan to me by May 15th that will completely overhaul the detail system.  It is broken. It is pervasive. And the status quo will not be tolerated on my watch.

“We are taking action to change the system swiftly and comprehensively.  I turned these recent allegations over to the Office of Inspector General for review.  As with other investigations, we will allow it to run its course.

“But let me be clear-- the recent controversy around NOPD details and the city’s photo safety camera program only highlights how deeply imbedded the problems with details are within the NOPD. I find it troubling and commit to the public to make it right.  We have ended the detail with Anytime Solutions, and the duties performed by those officers will now be performed the NOPD Traffic Division as we believe they should have been from the outset.  I have tasked City Attorney Nannette Jolivette Brown to do a thorough review of how paid details are being used within city government for city business.

“Our efforts to reform the NOPD will be unsuccessful if we do not completely and totally transform the way paid details work. I refuse to, nor can our citizens, wait on a federal consent decree to change the way the NOPD operates.

“The public has a right to be informed, and we will keep them informed on our efforts to right this ship.  We are going to work day and night and do whatever it takes to restore credibility and public trust in the NOPD and at City Hall.  I take that vow very seriously.”
