Today Speaker Jim Tucker informed the Louisiana Legislative Black Caucus that he would not continue in his pursuit to merge Southern University at New Orleans with the University of New Orleans because he did not have the votes to do so. We are thankful to the Speaker for notifying the LLBC that he would not pursue this merger. We now stand in support to move UNO into the University of Louisiana System.

As agreed, we will work with the Speaker and Governor Jindal to create more Cooperative Endeavors between SUNO, UNO, and Delgado and will continue talks to ensure that this occurs. We are most grateful to the other members of the House of Representatives who viewed this as a pertinent issue and supported the LLBC and SUNO. We would like to thank our constituents and persons from the Southern University System who actively engaged in the process and helped to ensure that this merger did not occur.
