Jindal, LED and CARBO

On Tuesday, Gov. Bobby Jindal and CARBO Ceramics Inc. CEO Gary Kolstad announced CARBO will invest $17 million in an expansion of its Airport Industrial Park facility in New Iberia, creating 40 new jobs and retaining 75 existing jobs.

The new jobs at CARBO's facility will average about $50,000 a year, plus benefits, and the company plans to complete hiring and a renovation of its facilities in the fourth quarter of this year. CARBO is adding a second production line to an Iberia Parish facility that has been in operation since 1978. CARBO manufactures proppant used by oil production companies to boost the output of oil and gas wells.

Gov. Jindal said, "This is great news for New Iberia and Acadiana. Since day one, we have made business retention and expansion our top economic development priority. CARBO could have made this investment in a nearby state, but they instead decided to invest right here in New Iberia because of our strong business climate and our customized workforce training program, Louisiana FastStart™, which is the best of its kind in the U.S. Louisiana's economy continues to outperform the South and U.S. thanks to investments from leading companies like CARBO, even in the midst of a difficult national economic environment."

Louisiana Economic Development estimates the 40 new direct jobs will result in 86 new indirect jobs in the Acadiana Region, for a total of 126 new jobs in the area. Additionally, LED estimates the project will result in $4.1 million in new, state tax revenue and $1 million in new, local tax revenue over the first 10 years of the project.

"During CARBO's 33-year history in Louisiana, we have invested tens of millions of dollars in the New Iberia and Shreveport communities," said Kolstad. "It is satisfying to work collaboratively with the state and increase this long-term investment while providing additional jobs and opportunities to the residents of Acadiana."

CARBO will receive employee screening, hiring and training assistance from Louisiana FastStart, a custom workforce solution provided by LED to expanding companies who meet eligibility requirements. In addition, CARBO is expected to utilize the state's Quality Jobs and Industrial Tax Exemption incentive programs.

LED has worked on the project with CARBO officials in New Iberia and at the company's Houston headquarters since December. The Acadiana Region's wealth of oil industry expertise played a key role in securing the expansion.

In addition to the new jobs retained and created by CARBO, modernization and equipping of the New Iberia plant will employ another 100 construction workers during the renovation. The latest expansion follows CARBO's refurbishment of its first resin-coating line in 2010, bringing total capital investment for both projects to $27.8 million.


New Orleans and the Army Corps of Engineers

According to the U. Army Corps of Engineers, on May 12, 2011, the Contracting Division of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District won a Secretary of the Army Excellence in Contracting Award for its financial obligations in fiscal year 2010 (FY10).


In FY10, the New Orleans District obligated $3.92 billion in U.S. business dollars – more than any other Corps district in the nation. These contractual obligations, which were mostly related to Hurricane & Storm Damage Risk Reduction System (HSDRRS) work, were an accomplishment that helped win the Outstanding Unit/Team Award for Specialized Services & Construction Contracting.


The Secretary of the Army Awards for Excellence in Contracting, established in 1997, recognize contracting and acquisition professionals, and are awarded annually to individuals, units, and teams that successfully execute contracting missions in support of U.S. Soldiers. This year, award recipients were announced at the Department of Defense Procurement Conference and Training Symposium.

All military and civilian Army contracting professionals are eligible for the award. Forty-five Corps of Engineers Districts were eligible for the award this year, and the New Orleans District was one of only four that was selected.


On Wednesday, June 8 from 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm EST, Amedisys Chief Medical Officer Dr. Michael Fleming will present a webinar regarding the recently proposed Accountable Care Organization (ACO) rules from CMS that encourage home health agencies, hospitals and physicians to work together to reduce hospitalizations and increase Medicare savings.


The webinar, titled “ACO Prep: How Providers Can Partner for Rewards” is part of DecisionHealth’s ACO Opportunities: Complete Two-Part Series and will cover how to ease the patient’s transfer to the home, improve communication among different provider settings, reduce readmission rates by nearly 10 percent, increase referrals, standardize patient education materials, boost patient/caregiver satisfaction, and improve medication management.


Dr. Fleming will be joined by Brenda Czado, director of home care for Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice located in Lewiston, Maine to explain how providers from home health agencies, hospitals and physicians have jumped ahead of the curve to start forming such partnerships that will position their agency for growth during this inevitable movement toward patient-centered care.


“The point of ACOs is to eliminate fragmented care and the duplication of services and risk of errors that comes with it,” said Dr. Fleming. “As we continue to focus on patient-centered care, it is imperative that a sustainable health care system be created.”

LSU’s Ourso College of Business

LSU E. J. Ourso College of Business has implemented recently revealed its latest Five-Year Strategic Plan for National Prominence.


“We will continue to move forward,” said E. J. Ourso College Dean Eli Jones. “Moving forward, it is obvious that the college, and all of LSU for that matter, will need to rely more heavily on private donations. To attract and retain world-class faculty and the state and country’s best students, we must adapt.”


The college’s strategic plan highlights four main goals:


Increase research productivity in support of long-term economic development


Increase the number and quality of graduate students and programs: enhance professional graduate degree programs


Increase the quality of undergraduate students and programs: increase rigor and relevance of undergraduate degree programs


Increase funding sources to support the aforementioned objectives: resource requirements


Performance indicators and strategies for each of the previously named goals are detailed in the strategic plan, which was developed with the input of the Dean’s Advisory Council, the Core Executive Committee and college institute directors.


“The strategic plan we have put together is a direct reflection of the resources that we have available to us in the business community,” Jones said. “We have the best of both worlds as far as real-world, business input and academia, and our initiatives directly support our objectives and the LSU Flagship 2020, which is the university’s strategic plan.”
