It will be “Dancing with the Real Stars” starting today as the Louisiana Ballroom Dance community ushers in its annual national competition starting today.

Many of the very best local and national amateur ballroom dancers will take to the floor as the 2011 Gumbo of Ballroom weekend takes place June 17-19 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Baton Rouge, LA.

The all-amateur competition, the USA Dance Gumbo DanceSport Championships, is on Friday and Saturday. The pro-am competition, The Louisiana Challenge, is on Sunday.

The DanceSport Championships is sanctioned as a national qualifying event for the  National Championships sponsored by USA Dance.  One of the premier ballroom competitions in the nation, the event draws top amateur couples from throughout the country, including many current champions in various categories of American Style and International Style dancesport.  In 2010 there were 275 dancers from 23 states.

The USA Dance Gumbo DanceSport Championships is the largest dance competition of its kind in the South and is a National Qualifying Event for the 2012 Nationals Championships.  Louisiana will be well represented as many of the top ballroom dancers in the state compete for the gold, silver and bronze in classic dances such as fox trot, waltz, swing and more.

"On the dance floor this weekend will be couples from across the nation and couples who have represented the United States in the World Games, as well as Blackpool, which is recognized as the mecca of ballroom competition", said. Ann Durocher-Stevens of Houma, the President, Louisiana DanceSport.

According to Durocher-Stevens, of the 290 dancers there are 26 adult couples representing South Louisiana and 22 PreTeen through Youth couples from Jefferson Parish and Lake Charles dance programs.

The Louisiana Challenge features local professional dance teachers performing with their students.  Only the amateur partners are judged.  They compete in a wide variety of dances in several age and skill categories for men and women.  Winners of the top events are regarded as the best dancers in the state.

The events are organized by Louisiana DanceSport in partnership with the Louisiana Gumbo Chapter 5031 of  USA Dance and with Saturday Night Ballroom, the leading social dancing club in Baton Rouge.  The events are  also part of the 2011 Louisiana Governor's Games.

The events begin at noon on Friday and continue through the evening, all day Saturday and Saturday evening, and Sunday morning.  Spectators may purchase tickets at the door for $15.  See full details see
